Talking with Omer Leibovitz of The Courtesy Tier

James: I keep looking back to the "Brick City Sound Riot Festival" and the first time I saw the band perform live. Though there were a over abundance of excellent performances, the Courtesy Tier offered a lot of interesting twists and turns. Can you give me a little background on the band? How you met and how you evolved?

Omer: Layton and I met in Boston around2001. We had both been Jersey boys Layton from south jersey growing up ona diet of grunge and Hip Hop. I grew up in North Jersey on more of a Punk Rockand Metal diet, but we both also loved the usual classics such as Jimi Hendrix,Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan etc...

We were both freshmen attending Berklee college of music. Wemet in the dorms, naturally connecting on important issues such as potconsumption, psychedelics and music, we had decided it would be great to dosome messing around. At that time Layton had already been attendingBerklee for a semester longer and when we would hang out he and his roommatewould start exposing me to a whole lot of Jazz music they were studying:Coltrane, Elvin Jones (which became one of Layton's biggest influences), GrantGreen (which became one of my greatest guitar influences).

To make this long story a bit shorter, we spent about 5 years playing ina 7 piece experimental rock band: Drums, bass, Keyboards, two guitars, and twosaxophones. Touring around, playing festivals and such, until getting alongbecame difficult, and truth be told once the drugs wore off a bit neitherLayton and I wanted to experiment so freely with our music anymore. So webroke up and started a 3 piece instrumental band called The Courtesy Tier andmoved to NYC. When Layton and I realized that we had wanted to get backto our rock roots and could not see eye to eye with our Bass player, he decidedto go his own way and Layton and I decided we were gonna learn how to sing andmove forward... Here we are now.

Originally Courtesy Tier was actually Courtesy Tear which was one of those joke sayings used by us and our friends at the time, referringto something crass we should not get in to. We connected with what thename meant to us.

To Layton and I playing music is not about us it's really about the people weare interacting with. We have always discussed how important it is to usthat our live shows would not be about people coming to see us, but rather uscoming to entertain and interact with people. We were craving thatauthenticity we got from our Jersey VFW days. When you felt like thesebands you loved were on your team. And we wanted to get back to that, we didn'twant to be another band doing anything for a record deal or money. Feeling likewe were exploiting people who would come see us by charging as much as wecould, or guilting them in to showing up just because some guy that might bookus will be there and its all about impressing him.

Courtesy Tier, we connected with it. we wanted it to remind us to moveslowly and make art that might actually better someones day, or make them happyor get them dancing.

James: How long did it takebefore you found your voice and felt that you could make things work/gel as aduo?

Omer: It's been about 3years as a duo, and we are just starting to feel a bit closer to gelling theway we would like.

James: Did the sound anddirection of the band change as the lineup changed?

Omer: Yes the sound haschanged drastically, this is the most honest we have dared to be.

James: You mentioned howdrugs were a big influence early on in the band. When did it stop working foryou?

Omer: I don't know that they were a biginfluence, but they were around and I dont think they ever worked for any ofus, I think they slowed us down.

James: Was it difficult atfirst to write and create without that influence?

Omer: No it was a verynatural transition towards focusing more on achieving a musical vision versesbefore when we would be more on the instant gratification of the playingexperience.

James: Though you come fromthe Jazz and Classic Rock background I can't help but feel a Alt Country vibein a lot of your songs?

Layton: Absolutely Omer grew up listening to alot of punk rock, but also loves country and Folk: Towns Van Zandt, BobDylan,

James: The song "FallAsleep" from Holy Hot Fire had an immediate impact on me. I often foundmyself waking up with the songs rhythm in my head. I was curious aboutits inspiration and recording.

Omer: The basicsong Layton and I wrote on the spot while jamming around, the words are a storyof growing up, learning to accept that life is just a series of phases. Peoplecome and go ushering you from one world to the next, those who stick around areusually still teaching you.

James: The song "Cold" originally appeared on "Map and Marker" . What led to your decision to re-record it for "Holy Hot Fire"?

Omer: We re-recorded "Cold" because we really love playing that song. In the two years we've been playing it the composition has just kept developing, shifting and getting more involved. So we wanted to capture the new version the way we play it live.

James: Have you had thechance to tour in support of "Holy Hot Fire"?

Omer: Not as much as wewould like. We are going down south during March and hit up SXSW for a fewshows.

James: I've seen you performlive a couple of times and have been very impressed by both performances. I'vealso noticed a big difference in your personalities on stage. While Layton isconstantly smiling and looking as if he's having the time of his life. You seema lot more subdued and focused. I might even go as faras saying possessed. How would you describe your personalities both onstage and off?

Omer: Yeah I don't thinkits a conscious thing, just kind of happens. Layton has always beenpretty laid back, and I have always been really afraid of singing and nervousin general so that might shine through a bit.

James: I understand you’re inthe midst of writing new material. Can we expect another release soon?

Omer: Yeah, we are hopingby spring.

James: What are your goalswith The Courtesy Tier? Where do you see yourselves going as both songwriters,musicians and as a band?

Omer: Creatively we arealways pushing ourselves to stay inspired. For the next record we are workingto try and satisfy our love for electronic elements in music, and loop basedwriting.

James: How do Omer and Laytonmeasure success as a band?

Omer: Most importantly wewant to like what we hear back. We also never let it get boring, we love toconstantly push each other away from getting too comfortable and we do measuresuccess through those small victories.

Sara - Spud Brain

As I was about to give Sara and their EP Spud Brain a listen I couldn't help but think I was about to tune in to a female fronted pop band that sang songs about high school crushes, teen alienation and how "Mom will never understand". Though, that type of music has surely carved out it's little niche in musics broad landscape, it could not have been further from the truth when it came to this band.

Sara, in fact, are a three piece (each of them strapping young men) from New Brunswick, NJ. The band plays a style that mixes 70's rock with the aesthetics 90's indie and a bit of a low-fi value that ties everything together rather nicely.
The EP's seven tracks are driven by some genius guitar work that produces a lot of unique and interesting twists and turns. Spud Brain delivers its share of up tempo and low key moments throughout. Each song offering its own unique identity and style. There are soaring moments on songs like the title track "Spud Brain" and its followup "Cancer Songs". While, offerings such as "Almond Hours" and "Criminals" offer a more intimate vibe.

Overall I found this to be an excellent release that has a lot of different elements that come together rather seamlessly. I always wondered what it was about New Brunswick that turned out so much excellent music. Listening to Sara moves me to continue seeking the answers. This band is definitely worth further investigation. James Damion

Friends, Bands Gather at Maxwell's to Celebrate The Release of Those Mockingbirds 'Fa So La'

As The Sun The Moon The Stars opened the show I couldn't help but wonder, "How in the Hell is this band opening for anyone?" A few minutes prior to the show I had asked Adam Bird of Those Mockingbirds the 411 on the bands playing that night. He remarked "Can't Miss" when referring to them. The band, by far the heaviest I've seen at Maxwells since witnessing Kylesa take the stage in 2009. With a sound that reminded me of bands such as The Melvins, Sabbath and Botch to name just a few, how could you go wrong. Matthew Dwyer, Guitar/Vocals, has an electrifying stage presence. Later that night I snagged the bands album "Mindreader" which has been dominating my turntable since. The band is from West Paterson NJ and I highly recommend both buying the record and checking them out live.

Following an opening band as good as T.S.T.M.T.S.'s can be a tricky gig but Birdhand made the transition seamlessly. Here was another first time experience for me that was incredibly rewarding. Birdhand have only been around for a short time but have made a lot of noise in that short period. Formed in Santa Cruz California but recently transplanted to New York City. The band has been both praised and produced by Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer. The band has an excellent rock sound which seems to be getting harder to find with all the indie, alt and post bands dominating music today. It's good to see a band that flat out, rocks. Singer/Guitarist Weeds vocals have a raspy quality that had me comparing him to Girls VS Boys vocalist Scott McCloud. Their set provided plenty of energy and solid musicianship. Birdhand definitely had that PMA going strong.

Just as Birdhand finished their set I headed away from the stage to catch my breath and seek out a few friendly faces I had briefly encountered earlier. I've been going to Maxwells regularly since the early nineties but since covering shows for Jersey Beat and of course United By… I rarely talk to more than a handful of people. I usually just take in the show while taking my pictures and just head home. These days I often go home with a pain in my neck considering how many friendly faces call out my name. It was really a blast seeing so many friends interacting and rocking out. Since becoming part of The Tiny Giants collective I've forged friendships and been introduced to so many creative and inspiring bands. Seeing so many of them there to support Those Mockingbirds and all the bands makes me want to go to more and more shows while providing me with plenty of fuel for the bog.

I originally caught Those Mockingbirds when they played the Brick City Riot Festival back in September of 2011. They played a great set of dirty, yet beautiful Rock n' Roll that night that really stuck with me. Since that night I've caught them a handful of times and I can honestly say, they get better with each and every performance. Though they weren't headlining this specific show it was indeed their night. With the official release of "Fa So La" and Star Morales of Star Beat Music in the house. How could it not be.

As the band took the stage and launched in to their set. I found myself doing something I rarely do, dancing and singing along to every note. These days I find myself going to more and more shows, adding more and more to my list of favorites. As much as I love a lot of these bands I could hardly name a song of theirs if I was cornered. Yet alone, know the lyrics and verses of each and every song. It's just a matter of numbers. When I was just out of high school I lived with a band who often played the record of the band they'd be sharing the stage with that weekend. Just so they'd be familiar with the choruses when it was time to join in. For me personally, Fa So La has just dug itself into my subconscious over the past months. It's that fucking good. Adam Bird is the perfect frontman. He has this presence that is endearing to both the crowd and the band. That and he can flat out sing and play guitar. As a whole Those Mockingbirds fire on all cylinders producing a sound I feel Rock and music as a whole has been missing for quite a while.

At one point during the set their surprise guest was unveiled in the form of World Inferno Friendship Society's Rebecca Schlappich, giving the band not one but two insanely talented and beautiful violinists. It was a really special moment to say the least. One of the highlight of the bands set for me was when they played "Coast to Coast." a song so good I felt my entire body moving spastically to it's rhythm. The band ended their set briefly only to be called back for an encore of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way". A song that hasn't been done justice since the band Seaweed covered it for the "Clerks" soundtrack back in the mid 90's.

Closing the show was Shayfer James. As the band took the stage an older photographer sporting some very sweet gear handed his camera to his lady friend and told her "Fuck these people, just push your way to the front and get some good shots." That little exchange hit me in all the wrong places and changed my mood drastically. I seriously thought about confronting him but a dick is a dick and he'll always be one. Arguing my point would be pointless. Though I thought, if only for a moment to just walk up to him and punch him in the throat, reality found it's way to my doorstep and I just removed myself from the situation. Douche bags like that should stick to taking pictures of barn doors and making coffee table books for bald guys with pony tails. Leave the shows to us beautiful people. As the band played I couldn't help but notice the crowd had changed so I made my way back to the bar fro my last Coke of the night. Though Shayfer JamesShayfer James Facebook had a nice vibe about them I was already in the wrong frame of mind and didn't really hang for the entire set. Despite that little moment this was a great show all around, Lots of love to all the friends who came out to support the bands and one of the only establishments that continues to book great shows. Though I had originally planned on writing a show review for the Killing Horse Records anniversary show, I just lost track of time. Instead I thought I'd go ahead and post some images and thoughts about the show. This was a not only a night of celebration for a label and the bands that call it home. It was a testament to the fact that we are in the midst of a thriving scene. When Dave and I started this blog I was looking for an energy and inspiration that Unite Fanzine was no longer giving me. At the time I had no idea just how much of that inspiration was about to hit me. Killing Horse Records and The Tiny Giants Artist Collective have given this blog and me personally, the fuel to not only do this, but fully enjoy and look forward to it.

Killing Horse has become a platform for some of the best bands and musicians in the area.

They've helped foster a scene that continues to welcome new bands and inspire people to get involved and go to shows. They've recently signed the Nico Blues and plan on new releases in 2012 and beyond. The label is also a part of a growing community known as the "Tiny Giants Artist Collective". We look forward to the labels future success and growth. See you all at the next anniversary show.

Wreaths - Live Maxwells Hoboken NJ 01/19/2012

I saw the Wreaths a few months back at the Asbury Park Lanes in the bands hometown of Asbury Park NJ and I have to say that they completely caught me off guard and blew me away, so when I saw that they were playing my neck of the woods last night I actually got off my old lazy ass and ran down to Maxwells to see if they could impress me a second time around...and I have to say that they definitely did it again.

The Wreaths play a style of rock that I would say draws from classic 70's rock like T Rex, Neil Young etc but they infuse their music with atmospheric keyboards, grooving drums and bass and a lot of excellent guitar interplay between what is sometimes 3 guitarist. Basically, the Wreaths formula is to start out with a solid drum and base line and just pile heaps and heaps of guitar noise on top and then just ride the thing at maximum volume until it can't be ridden anymore.

The Wreaths are in the process of releasing a split cd with Seaside Graves that should be out in the next month or so. The band was kind enough to give me an advance cd of the split cd and I have to say that it is killer, so keep an eye on United By Rocket Science for further details about the cd's release, and catch the Wreaths if they come to your town...Dave G.

Those Mockingbirds Prepare For Record Release with Show at Maxwells

As Those Mockingbirds get set to invade Hoboken's Maxwells to celebrate the coming release of their EP 'Fa So La' on Star Beat Music. I got to speak with the bands lead singer/guitarist Adam Bird about the upcoming, show, release and that tasty looking vinyl.
There are a lot of things I'd like to talk about with Adam in the future. Until then I decided to focus on what's happening in the upcoming days and weeks. Here's what he had to say. James Damion

James: Congratulations on the upcoming release. I just purchased both versions of the vinyl (Black/Gold) last night.

Adam: THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!

James: Who came up with the idea for the different versions?

Adam: I believe it was Star's (Star Beat Records) idea to have different package options. We always like doing this kind of thing, offering a more full experience that is, but I think she proposed it to us initially, and we, kinda offered a bunch of ideas as to what we could offer for each package.

James: Was the initial release only available in the digital format?

Adam: Yea, we decided when 'Fa Sol La' was done being recorded that we would only do physical copies if they were vinyl because CDs are just too expensive of an investment for a band right now when all theyre gonna do is get tossed in a dusty pile once its ripped into a computer.

James: Can we expect any extras? Songs? Alternate Versions?

Adam: Yeah, we are including a bonus track called "Coast To Coast XY". Its a total re-imagining of the song that is much more vibe-y and laid back with Tory singing lead and myself singing her backup parts.

James: What was it that led Those Mockingbirds and Star Morales and Star Beat Music to give 'Fa So La' a proper release?

Adam: I had caught wind that Star was looking to get into the vinyl game, so i sent her 'Fa Sol La' before it was released and told her that we would be interested in talking if she liked the record. A week later she got back to me and told me she wanted to put it out. Pretty clean cut.

James: You'll be playing Maxwell's this Friday night. Word has it that there will be a surprise guest. Care to spill the beans?

Adam: No bean spilling here, but its a really exciting thing for us to have another musician, especially one more accomplished, join us for a full song!

James: I have to tell you I had visions of Stevie Nicks taking the stage in a flowing gown.

Adam: If we had Stevie Nicks on stage with us I would've announced it instantly!

James: Will there be any other surprises?

Adam: Our set list is going to be very fresh from the last time we played in the area... lots of new twists and turns that we've developed over the last few tours. Its also probably the most high energy set we've ever done. a true blitzkrieg of guitars.

James: Aside from Those Mockingbirds I'm not familiar with anyone else on the bill. Are there any connections with the rest of the line up?

Adam: The Sun The Moon The Stars is a band of vagrants that I was playing with for a bit about a year ago, and they are close friends of mine. Shayfer James is a good buddy of our bassist Rob. Birdhand is a band we met thru mutual friends a few months back and we will be touring with them soon.

James: The last time we talked you said you were practicing with the band for the first time since the tour. How long were you out and what were some of the hot spots?

Adam: We tend to go out for alot of short runs instead of long ones because we can revisit the same towns more frequently that way. These past few dates have been notable for the fact that we were playing numerous 2+ hour sets, which is a challenge for a band with only two EPs out... but we made it work, tried out a lot of new things on the fly, and grew as a band because of it.

James: Are you going to be going out to support the release?

Adam: Yes, we have tour dates in February and March lined up right now, lots of them with Birdhand.

James: My first impression of the band was at The Brick City Sound Riot. That really wasn't that long ago. Can you tell me a little about the band and how you've evolved?

Adam: We've only been a band a little over two years... Year one was mostly us trying to do things as fast as we could, which to a degree got the ball rolling, but after awhile we regrouped, and Tory and I found new members in Rob Kevin and Jon, to finally start being the band we felt like we could be. So the past year we have really started to become what we wanted to be when we started, which was the kind of band who stuck out, whether in a good a bad way would depend on the listeners tastes i suppose, but either way one that stuck out amongst the sea of bands out there.

James: I don't know if you remember but that night I was up front taking pictures, We pretty much got up in one an others faces. I thought you were either going to kill me or use my ribs for reverb. Do you tend to lose yourself in the music when you're out there performing? (Adam later pulled me aside and formally introduced himself.)

Adam: I do remember, and im not sure which I was about to do to you, but I'm sure it was one or the other. When we are playing I really tend to throw myself to the lions and see what happens. I do this because I find that it provides more entertainment for the crowd and they are more likely to remember you and the songs you are playing. Sometimes I talk alot and it can be funny, or, some shows, I dont talk at all and I end up throwing myself on the floor alot.... but no matter what I end up doing, I tend to be in a sort of trance when we are on stage.

James: Judging from my limited experience working with you in the collective. You seem to be somewhat of an enforcer. Is that a fair characterization or am I completely off?

Adam: Nope, I am the kind of person who sees whats missing from a situation and attempts to do what I can to fix that. In Tiny Giant, there was no enforcer, so i became that. In Those Mockingbirds, I try to be the one who puts the gas in the tank.

A Social State - Everyone's Your Friend 2011

A Social State caught my attention straight out of the box with the warm and inviting opening track " Termination Papers". The remainder of the songs provided for our listening pleasure are excellent mid to uptempo rockers that bare a similarity to the band FAR, at least to this listeners ears.

A Social State compare themselves to bands such as Colour Revolt, Saves The Day, Nada Surf, and The Pixies. If you are a fan of any of these bands then I think A Social State should be right up your alley, and I would highly recommend that you give this top notch album a listen...Dave G.

When this record showed up in my mailbox I wasn't really sure what to expect in all honesty. I assumed I was going to hear some raging new school hardcore, but to my surprise what we have here is some straight up no bullshit punk/hardcore that brings The Hot Snakes to mind, but also incorporates a bit of a Revolution Summer DC feel as well.

Overall this record is an excellent slice of catchy unrelenting punk/hardcore that gets better with each listen. Definitely worth your hard earned cash...Dave G.

"Taking a Closer Look at KillingHorse Records" Part II

As we get set to celebrate the second anniversary of Killing Horse Records tomorrow night at Hoboken's legendary watering hole Maxwells; I spoke with Mike and Ryan about the event, the bands and the future of the label itself. In part two of my interview I decided to touch on the show, the bands and the promising future of the label. Here's what the guys had to say. James Damion

James: You recently lost one of the areas best outfits due to a breakup.
Did Ben Franklins break up come as a surprise or was it something you saw coming?

Ben Franklin

Mike: It was a bummer for sure, we had no idea they were breaking up. I dont think anyone did. It's OK - we wish them nothing but the best, but in the end they need to do what is right for them, and we respect that. Things like that happen, but we still love everyone from Ben Franklin, and we love their music. They were one of our absoulte favorite bands from the area. It's like anytime one of your favorite bands break up.
Ultimately it makes the Urgency 7" we did with them that much more special. I'm so glad we took a chance on them and got that record made.

James: Did it have an initial effect on the label? What were your first thoughts?

Mike: We were invested in them financially with the 7" we put out that year, so it hurt the promotion of the record, but thats no where near where our first thoughts were, we were just like "damn, we aren't going to get to hear anymore new music by them, or get to see any of more shows". The world needs more bands like Ben Franklin -they got it. Again, I'm just glad we got to document that. That's what having a record label is all about, and their records will always mean a lot to us personally.

James: The bands breakup was followed by the signing of rising stars
The Nico Blues. What was it about them in particular that blew you away?

The Nico Blues

Ryan: We've been big fans of the Nico Blues for some time now. That record, "Blame the Boredom, Blame the Basements" is absolutely phenomenal. When I first got my hands on it,
I think I listened to it for three straight days. In fact, our biggest regret at the time was that it had already come out, and we had seemingly missed the boat on it. Yet here we are about a year later and it's coming out again on our label, and we couldn't be happier. Even beyond the music though, we're big fans of the guys in the band. We had our first real exposure to them when Mike booked them at The Irish in Kearny back in September of 2010. We hit it off real well, and they were clearly a group of people with whom we would love to work, so I'm real glad we now have that opportunity.

James: Your planning on re-issuing their album
"Blame the Boredom. Blame the Basements." Will it be getting any special treatments such as remastering or bonus tracks?

Mike: We expanded the packaging to include lyrics, which is really cool. As for the record we wanted to leave the record as is, its as much a re-issue, a it is just out of stock, and we are picking up where they left off. We love that record as well, so we are really excited to be putting it out on Killing Horse.

James: Are there any plans for a new record with them in the works?

Mike: We are taking it one step at a time with them. They are not obligated to put anything else out on Killing Horse, but we definitely want to hear everything they record. If it works for both of us and the timing is right, then thats great.

James: Can you tell me anything about your involvement with
The Tiny Giants Artist Collective and if, how it would involve any future releases for KHR?

Mike: The Tiny Giants Collective has been awesome, it has created a real sense of unity in the New Jersey scene, or whatever you want to call it. It's really a great representation of why we got into the business of putting out records. From the second we met the guys in The Nico Blues and Holy City Zoo, who started the whole thing, we just seemed to be about the same issues, bringing people together, pooling resources, moving forward. so it's great way to help connect the dots. Recently its been growing a lot. Its a great way to get introudcuded to like-minded bands, and I'm sure that we will either put out a record by another Tiny Giant band, or get intorudcuded to a band due to our involvement with them.

James: The "Two Year Anniversary" show at Maxwells is coming fast. Any last minute jitters or thoughts?

Ryan: Ah jitters - no, no, nothing like that. We're just so nonchalant and cool that we don't get the jitters... Actually, we're just super excited about the whole thing. It's our big birthday party that we put together, and at 2 years old, that makes us a pudgy toddler who just learning how to walk, so it's a great way to kick off a new year where we hope to find ourselves walking into new territories and bringing some great music to new listeners' ears. As for last minute thoughts, I think this is going to be a show for the books - we've got Cicada Radio, whose new material is blowing us away, the Nico Blues, who are making their Killing Horse debut, Invisible Lines will be debuting a new member - Mr. Geoff Bennington,
¡No Pasaran! will be performing their final pre-hiatus show - adding even more excitement to a guaranteed electric set, and Secret Country will be performing as an 8-piece band with the addition of myself on guitar and the alluring and talented Ms. Katelynn Siegle on vocals. It's going to be a night people are discussing so the only question is, do you want to be in the loop or not?

James: One of the bands playing that night, Invisible Lines, we're recently injured in a plane crash or something. How are the guys healing and will they be ready to perform?

Ryan: Yes, that is 100% correct, their private jet was shot down by Libyan rebels during a peacekeeping mission a few months ago. After fighting their way through enemy lines (taking no prisoners) they eventually made it to Tangiers, where there was the whole
"Fidelio incident" - which I can't go into for legal reasons. But they managed to get out of the country and fly back to the States just in time for the show. They've assured me that their injuries are not very serious (mostly just a few missing digits/limbs, some minor 2nd degree burns - nothing that a few aspirin can't fix) and they'll be ready to go Friday night.

Cicada Radio

James: I got to see
Cicada Radio perform the other night. The band is one of our favorites. I was just wondering if you're planning on getting around to releasing their EP on vinyl or CD any time soon.

Mike: Cicada Radio has just been getting better and better, Ryan and I just can't stop talking about how much they improve everytime we see them. That's a testament to them, honestly. It's great to see a band grow like this. As for "Imposter", we'd love to release it physically. At the same time the new stuff they have been doing really showcases how much they have been growing. We are currently discussing with the guys from Cicada how we want to handle that dichotomy. I can promise you this though, we will definatly be releasing something by them physically. Hopefully sooner than later.

James: New band releases, signings on the horizon?

Ryan: We've definitely got some things in mind for the remainder of the year, both current bands and new, however not all the details are hammered out yet, so I'm not going to go into the details. But, to give you a little taste, chances are good that we'll be seeing a new
full-length from Secret Country, and as Mike mentioned earlier there should be some new Cicada Radio material at some point as well.

Joe Wilson and the Loose Ends

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder I find myself with less and less desire to go out to shows. A brand new heating system and a box of new records can start to look pretty cool when faced with the option to brave the elements and interact with people on an up close and personal. Yet with all the comforts of home and a very hungry cat looking at me as if I was a big bag of Meow Mix. Getting to see a couple of my favorite bands along with a couple of new ones felt like a pretty neat idea.

I hadn't been to Kearny Irish since July when I was there to see Night Birds and Municipal Waste. Since then it seems most of the shows that have taken place were of a strict Metal tip and after seeing Municipal Waste, well, let's just say I wasn't into the vibe.

Truth is I really missed the place. It's a great venue with a really upbeat vibe. The drinks are cheap and the venues space is vast.

Though the attendance was sparse, perhaps due to all the post holidays, pre New Year shenanigans; I don't think you could have wished for a better gathering of people. As I made my way inside I was almost instantly greeted by the smiling faces of Mike Sylvia (Killing Horse Records) and

Frank DeFranco (Holy City Zoo). As the night went on I got to spend more time with other members of the Tiny Giants Artist Collective. All while learning the secret handshake and getting the groups recipe for some of its future endeavors.

The show promptly opened with Joe Wilson and the Loose Ends. Joe Wilson is a singer/songwriter with a style that is deeply rooted in his New Jersey upbringing. He and Loose Ends gave off a great vibe throughout their set. As I stood there listening intently. I curiously asked, "Who is this?" "What's his name?". This was my first helping of the artist but the vibe was very warm and familiar. I had noticed a pile of his CD's on the merch table earlier but by the time I made my way back there they were already gone. Check out his Facebook Page and give his music a listen. The Vapor Apes

Things got pretty strange as The Vapor Apes took the stage. Nerdy, Goofy and more fun than a dildo at a nunnery, the band is a cross between Devo, Digital Underground and early Beastie Boys. Though this was only their second show they had their shit down pat. The Apes mix guitar, bass , drums with computer technology with excellent results. Songs like "Computer", "Girls Say" and "I'm checkin' Out" were highlights. Here is a band that is not only entertaining but can back it up with excellent music skills. Major respect to the bands guitarist for just bringing things to another level.
Happy Birthday to the bands bassist Paul Beier. I'm happy he got a chance to celebrate it with a stellar set.

Cicada Radio

Next up was Cicada Radio. Here is a band that I've found to be somewhat elusive. Since the release of the bands debut "Imposter" I've been searching the landscape to find a hard copy; only to find months later that it was a digital only release. I had the digital version all along having listened to it countless times. As good as it was you couldn't blame me for wanting to wrap my hands around a hard copy.
The band has also played a handful of shows that I unfortunately missed out on. Needless to say I was finally in the same building with these guys and was going to thoroughly enjoy every note. As the bad kicked into gear I turned off the flash on my camera as to not disturb the strange ritual that was unfolding before my eyes and ears. In theory I wanted to capture singer guitarist Pat O'Keefe's warrior soul within the working of my Canon 7D. As good a record "Imposter" is, to see the band perform live takes thing to a totally different level. The band hails for parts Jersey City and Kearny and are not only on the stellar KillingHorse Records but they are also members of The Tiny Giants Artist Collective.
Be sure to check them out when they play KillingHorse Records 2 year anniversary at Maxwells on Friday, January 6th. It will surely be an amazing show.

Brick + Mortar

Last but certainly not least were Brick + Mortar. I've seen Brandon and John perform twice in recent weeks and both times I've left with a jaw dropping experience. If i could say anything about this dynamic duo, it is that Brick & Mortar are "Fucking Loud." Fusing live instruments, Brandon handles vocals, switches between guitar and bass all while playing with samples with the approach of a mad scientist. John's has a unique approach to drumming that includes bringing the bass drum in to the crowd. The appeal is that of a sonic apocalypse. One that will alert the senses and leave them satisfied and shell shocked. Brandon's interaction with the crowd is notable considering their reactions and response. The result is that of an arena sound with a intimate vibe. It's really inspiring when you see that level of involvement from an audience.
Brick + Mortar

It's always good to go out and see a diverse lineup of talent. Each band offered a fresh and appealing sound that never mirrored the other. I guess that no matter how cold it gets out there; A night out to see live music and good friends almost always wins against the option of staying home and . James Damion

They've worked with a lot of ours friends by supporting their bands, releasing their records and giving them a platform to further express themselves. The label is essential to the music we love and it has done more than its part to foster a sense of community and scene in this area. Its people like these that help us survive creatively. Killing Horse Records is gearing up to celebrate their two year anniversary at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, New Jersey on Friday, January 6, 2012. Killing Horse will be showcasing their current active roster which includes Secret Country, No Pasaran, Invisible Lines, The Nico Blues and Cicada Radio. The label started by Mike Sylvia and Ryan Gross, two longtime friends, out of their apartment in Kearny, NJ has been gaining momentum in its first two years of existence, and has gained quite a reputation in the New Jersey DIY music scene for having a great ear for local talent. The show will be $10 and will start at 8:30pm. Maxwell’s is located at 1039 Washington Street, in Hoboken, NJ.

Adding to the excitement of the event, The Nico Blues, Killing Horse’s newest band will be celebrating the reissue of their debut album, Blame the Boredom, Blame the Basements. The Nico Blues have been on the bands to watch list for many New Jersey bloggers and scene reporters and as the first press of their debut effort goes out of print, Killing Horse Records will be jumping right in to help with the support of the record, adding a lyric booklet to the packaging of the record. Filling out the bill will be Cicada Radio, Invisible Lines and No Pasaran. Headlining the event will be New Jersey’s favorite outlaws, Secret Country.

Killing Horse has a huge year planned. They will be launching their new website, and for the first time will have t-shirts, hoodies and stickers for sale. On top of all that, the boys at Killing Horse records plan on releasing 4 to 5 records in 2012. “We’ve got the year planned out and are excited to kick it off with the 2 year anniversary show at Maxwell’s” says Co-founder Mike Sylvia. In celebration of the release of The 65's debut "Strike Hard" Dromedary Records Kingpin Al Crisifulli gathered some close and not too close friends Harp N' Bard to drink, enjoy some live music and drink, drink, drink. As I arrived the party was already in full swing. There were so many familiar and friendly faces you'd have thought I had walked onto the set of "Cheers". With they're highly anticipated and well recieved record in tow, family and friends in attendance, it was time to celebrate.
With Mr. Al "The Pride of Team Dromedary" dressed in his #65 Yankees Jersey it was party time. You could not measure his level of pride or enthusiasm.

Stuyvesant took the stage and launched into a short but funtastic set with
"Johnny Tinitis" and
"Hellbent for Heather". As the opening riff for "Duly Noted" made it to my ears I felt my feet leave the floor.
My non existent rhythm kicked in as I danced around spastically like a retarded Peanuts Character.
(Joe Cool I am not) My love for Stuyvesant and each one of the inmates in that crazy band grows with each and every show. Their upbeat vibe is so infectious you can't help but want to go to each and every show and event. The fact that they are such awesome people doesn't hurt one bit.

The 65's

Soon enough it was time for the 65's to do some damage. Joe, Dan, Cindi and Johnny are a relatively new band but have been on Jerseys underground scene since the 90's in acts like
Balloon Squad, Electric Frankenstein and Shirk Circus to name just a few. Their debut record "Strike Hard" is one of the years best and will surely make waves. Their mix of excellent song writing, excellent musicianship and gravely vocals makes for a very intimate and real vibe. Joe V. is a perfect frontman with his share of swagger and bravado while John Steel is a taskmaster on the drums. Cindi (Bass) and Dan (Guitar/Vocals) give the band a perfect balance and sense of ease. The Band opened with edgy "Blades of Glass" and followed with the folky "Greatest Pretense". All in all they played a good dozen or so songs including covers from The Psychedelic Furs "Pretty in Pink" (which is featured on the album.)
and Social Distortion's "Bad Luck", a song Joe Vocaturo's voice sounds custom fitted for.
It was really good to see everyone. See some new faces and hopefully make a few new friends. I highly recommend checking out Dromedary Records . While your there make sure you get The 65's - Strike Hard disc. You just might find your next favorite band.

On Thursday night I managed to will myself off the couch and head down to the
Lower East Side in order to show my support to a band who was celebrating the official release of their new EP
"Holy Hot Fire". If you've seen my recent review you'll know that it's been on in heavy rotation at the United by bed and optional breakfast. As I pulled in to a spot just across from Pianos
I entertained the idea of grabbing a pastrami at Katz's before running in. However, the thought of entering Pianos smelling like a Pastrami suit in such hard economic times seemed risky.

As I made my way past the bar and headed towards the back of the club I couldn't believe it had been a few years since I'd attended a show. I'm pretty sure it was Beat The Devil.
As I made my way towards the front I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth about the crowd. A lot of friends and family had shown up to see the band celebrate their release.

It was a good vibe to say the least. As Omer and Layton took the stage I couldn't help but recall the first time I saw the band back in September. It was a three day music festival with over forty bands playing their hearts out. The fact that they stood out amongst the enormous amount of talent there.

The bands sound feels perfect in a small intimate setting with songs that have a rolling troubadour vibe often evoking imagery and emotion.
Think Tom Waits on a whiskey and chaw driven folky blues rampage. Omer looms as an ominous presence during songs. Perhaps channeling demons who are not quite ready for Happy Hour. Raising his brow after each song to interact and humbly thank the crowd. The bands drummer Layton is another story all together. Often smiling and taking not of familiar faces in the crowd.
At one point the amazingly talented Jessi Robertson joined the band on stage to sing "Standing Near" which is one of the tracks from "Holy Hot Fire's" EP.

Needless to say it was a good night worth missing the season finale of Burn Notice for.
Due to a rumbling in my stomach I sped off to the nearest greasy spoon for a late night meal and headed home to my better half. Check out the bands tunes and make you way out to see them live. James Damion

Sick of it All - Non Stop

As with any of Sick of it All's prior releases I met the news of a new record with a level of excitement reserved for few other bands. Having been a Hardcore fanatic since my early teens I followed the band from their very first demo to their first 7 inch and everything that followed. As much as I love many of the NYHC bands from that particular era, Sick of it All are in my mind both the ambassadors and kings of NYHC.

Just as my excitement reached the highest peaks, those feelings quickly faded when I heard the band was re-recording old classics as opposed to delivering new ones. The reworking, re-imagining classic tracks had me thinking of horrible choices that unlistenable bands like Asia and Emerson, Lake and Palmer would undertake. I debated for weeks as to whether or not to take the plunge, ultimately coming to the conclusion "It's Sick of it All." "There's no way they can mess this up."

"Non Stop" opens up with an updated version of "Clobbering Time" which welcomes back legendary rapper KRS-1 with his newly classic intro "Fresh for 2012 you bitches." Once Craig's Bass line introduces Lou's vicious growl "It's Clobberin' Time" even the most cynical ears are won over. The band rips through all the classics including "Clobberin' Time", "Injustice System", "US VS. Them", "World Full of Hate", "Pushed Too Far", "GI Joe Headstomp" and many other classics. All of the twenty-one songs featured are worth mention. Lou's vocals are venomous. Pete's guitar work adds chainsaw like results while Craig and Armand 's rhythms rage like dueling jackhammers. I really felt a certain raw, live quality to this. It was as if the band were sitting with me in my living room, up close and in your face. Sick of it all haven't only updated these songs, they've thoroughly upgraded them. "Non Stop" closes with a spoken word by KRS-1 that will definitely have you thinking. Though I will always favor the original recordings I will surely check in with "Nonstop's" versions frequently. Fans of the band will definitely feel rewarded. The CD version includes a bonus DVD featuring the bands 2001 Documentary "The Story So Far" which marks the first time it has been made available in DVD format. (As I listened to this record I couldn't help but think fondly of my old friend Gina "Last Daze" Lawson. She was a die hard
Sick of it All fan from day one. She would always refer to Lou and Pete motherly as "Her Boys". Gina, wherever you may roam I hope it's with a twelve pack and a walkman blasting "It's Clobberin' time".")

H2O - Don't Forget Your Roots

Since 1995 H20 and singer Toby Morse have been the hyperactive torchbearers for the message of "PMA", (Positive Metal Attitude) educating the world through their music and actions. Throughout their decade and a half existence they've often worn their influences on their sleeves. From early roots in the DC area to their days in New York and beyond.

On Don't Forget Your Roots" the band has decided to enter the much too often slippery slope of the "Tribute Album". When any band decides to do a "Covers" or "Tribute" album there are obviously going to be risks involved. Music's landscape, along with most record stores cut out bins, is littered with those who have tried in the past. The idea of covering a favorite song or paying tribute to the ones that inspired us to pick up an instrument and go fucking ape shit seems sincere enough. However it is not without it's pitfalls. There's the risk of completely failing to capture the original song/bands energy, quality or overall angst is a costly undertaking. While some of the most sincere bands often come off sounding like the cover band that plays at the local college every weekend.

In this particular case, H2O and to be more specific, Toby, aren't really guilty of any of these clichés but they're not exactly making a good argument as to why bands should continue this ritual. Toby really does a great job on 7 Seconds "Satyagraha" and handles
Social Distortion's "Sick Boy" with a sense of ease that is amazing. The bands homage to
Joey Ramone on "I Wanna Live" is worth both mention and praise. Though there are a few highlights, Rancid's "Journey to the End" and Sick of it All's "Friends Like You" come to mind. The problem lies in the plain simple fact that there are too many others that are either immediately forgettable or simply unbearable. The classic "Train in Vain” by the Clash is unfortunate while The Mighty Mighty Bosstones "Someday I Suppose" fails terribly with the absence of a horn section. Another problem that is quite evident throughout is that
Toby Morse simply doesn't have the vocal range for a lot of songs covered here. Though this isn't a terrible record, it is at it's very best, tolerable. "Don't Forget Your Roots" has it moments but overall fails to really reach it goals.Not bad for die-hard fans of the band but I don't think this will win them many new ones. James Damion

Courtesy Tier - Holy Hot Fire

As the end of the year approaches I've been treated to a handful of releases that I would easily classify as the musical peaks of my 2011. "Holy Hot Fire" just might be the most surprising of the mix. Brooklyn's Courtesy Tier has existed in different forms over the last seven years or so but finally found a comfortable niche' working as a duo which features
Omer Leibovitz on guitar and Layton Weedeman on drums.
The EP grabs you from the very start with "Fall Asleep".
A song so addictive I found myself singing along long before I knew the actual lyrics. The songs Alt-Country vibe is beautifully haunting, setting the tone for the emotional roller-coaster that is "Holy Hot Fire". Uplifting and warm at times, dark and emotionally crushing at others. Despite being a two piece Omer and Layton deliver a full sound that comes together perfectly. While "Fall Asleep", "Standing Near", "Friend" and "Calling Out" all share similar qualities and a somewhat haunting kinship, "Cold" stands as a rousing, frantic offering that gives the record a unique energy. Overall, the record is a perfect blend of Rock, The Blues and a quirky Alt-Country vibe. I'd highly recommend this to anyone with ears. James Damion

The 65's - Strike Hard

On the night prior to the release of the bands debut record "Strike Hard" I sat with 3/4's of the 65's over coffee and other unknown liquid refreshments to talk about the release. Having been treated to an advanced copy of the record I had listened to each and every track numerous times. So much so that it had quickly become the soundtrack to my work day. Though the interview didn't go quite as planned I felt I was able to convey my excitement about finally being able to officially share my feelings about one of my favorite releases of the year.

Featuring former members of
The Dark Brothers, Shirk Circus,
Electric Frankenstein and Balloon Squad to name just a few.
The band combines an impressive pedigree. The 65's score exceptionally high points on their debut. Mixing intelligent, highly evolved songwriting with catchy, stick to your ribs hooks, riffs and melodies. There's a real sense of maturity and ease about the songwriting that blends almost seamlessly with the rather dirty vibe of the music. Al's vocal quality has a sort of gravely cigarettes and whiskey quality to them that really add a nice dimension to the songs. Opening with the sweeping "Greatest Pretense" followed by the somewhat uplifting "Walk on Selfishly". I found myself almost immediately hooked. While songs like
"I Will Never Serve You", "Are You Tired of Me Yet" and "Wherever You Are" put the hook in me. It was Cindi's turn on the vocals "Worse Comes To" that made me put me on an emotional respirator. Thus placing "Strike Hard" at the top of my list for favorite releases of 20011. Top it off with a cover of The Psychedelic Furs 80's hit "Pretty in Pink" and you've got a record that will win over even the most jaded music fan. One can only hope that the future can promise more from this band. James Damion

Rye Coalition - Live & in Person DVD

Back in January of 2010 I was already writing for Jersey Beat covering local shows, writing and above all taking lots and lots of pictures for the site.

One day I got an email from Jim asking if I'd like to cover Rye Coalitions one off reunion and 70th Birthday celebration of David and
Gregg Leto's Dad Jack.

I was already dead set on going but had once again forgotten to get tickets. Covering the show meant I didn't need to hustle for one prior to the show. "Fuck Yeah" The band hadn't played in five years but truthfully

I hadn't seen them since the 90's. That night at Maxwells was by far one of, if not the, most incredible shows I had been to in my life. Now, for the first time since we're able to experience it through more than some random memories and about a hundred or so photos.

"Live & in Person" features the entire set from that February 19th 2011 set. The footage is exceptional, capturing the energy, enthusiasm and raw intensity of the bands performance. As I watched it I felt the same chills I experienced that night. Though I have to admit it was a little more comfortable watching from home than being front center. Not having Ralph Cuseglio's sweat dripping all over my camera was a big plus. Bonus features include interviews with Maxwells booking guru Tod Abramson and a very animated Alap Momin (Dälek). There's also a trailer for the upcoming Rye documentary
"Story of the Hard Luck Five". The trailer itself is, for lack of a better description,
hair raising. If this doesn't make you wet….. I don't know what will. Whether you're a long time or casual fan of the band, this is a must…. James Damion

Hot Snakes and Rye Coalition Bring Mayhem to Hoboken.

As the days drew closer to the show I recalled a September conversation with Michael and Vic of Static Radio NJ about how stoked we were about the Hot Snakes coming to Maxwell's. Here was a band that was both releasing an album and embarking on a European Tour and all they could talk about was a distant Hot Snakes show. A month passed and with all that talk I forgot to get my ticket. Did I not for see the show selling out quicker than a Justin Bieber signing at an all girls junior high? I don't know. The thing is I completely fail when it comes to getting advanced tickets to a show. So a few days before the show I begged Jim Testa to get me on the guest list by promising pictures, a story and my first born. Surprisingly, it worked.

It wasn't until the day of the show that I realized that Rye Coalition were also on the bill. Feeling as if my stomach was performing some kind of sick voodoo ritual, I thought to myself, "Shit, I don't know if i can handle this." Knowing full well that I was being counted on I sucked it up and headed out to meet my partner in crime Dave.

As we headed in I couldn't help but feel that there were a lot of friends missing in action. No sign of Mike or Vic along with a lot of others I expected would surely be there. I made my way up front to find a comfortable spot to get a few pics and enjoy a close and personal vibe. Before long I spotted some familiar faces including Jenni Matz, the woman behind the epic Rye Doc "The Hard Luck Five". All was well and before we knew it Rye Coalition launched into another unforgettable set.

The band launched into "One Daughter Hotter than One Thousand Suns" and never once let up from there. The bands energy and passion is boundless.
This was my third time seeing them this year; second time at Maxwells.
Thus matching the amount of times I saw them during their hey day. I can honestly say there are few bands that do it as well. Each time I've seen them they've had me come away with a new perspective on how a a band can perform at a peak level while also connecting with its audience on a personal level. After the set I ran into an old friend, Dave Sien who was electrified by the bands energy. As he tried to describe the look on guitarist Jon Gonell's face throughout the set, I intervened and said, "Possessed". That would be my best description of the bands entire set.

Before long it was time for Hot Snakes to take the stage.
It had been what, five years since the band was last active? Though I'd never seen them live I had all the records and was well versed when it came to their songs. As the group took stage I took a deep breath and readied myself for what I was about to witness.

The band quickly launched into "I Hate the Kids", "Gar Forgets His Insulin", "XOX" and "Who Died" from the album "Suicide Invoice". Rick and Speedo firing away while Jsinclair and Gar kept the rhythm.
The pace was fierce to say the least. At one point I noticed my that voodoo that had been working on my stomach all day was either gone or had been reborn in my hips as I could hardly stand still. As the band closed their set the already vocal crowd demanded more. Within minutes the band launched in to an encore of around six songs. More than enough to let the band get out of Hoboken unscathed. All and all it was just another amazing night at Maxwells. Great running into so many friends and finally putting a face to face to some of my long time Facebook friends. Can't wait to do it again.

Taking a Closer Look at KillingHorse Records Part I

In just a short time KillingHorse Records has managed to build a strong foundation and lasting reputation with a handful of incredible releases that have made an immediate impact on the New Jersey underground landscape and beyond. With releases from Ben Franklin (RIP),
Secret Country, Invisible Lines, Cicada Radio and ¡No Pasaran! the label is quickly establishing itself as a quiet giant on the independent music scene. As their releases become quick favorites I decided to ask Mike and Ryan about the labels origins and direction. Here's part one of my interview with the men behind the music. James Damion

James: Youstarted Killing Horse in the midst of a fragile economy and at a time when alot of record labels were on their last legs. What made you want to do this?

Mike:Our circle of friends became close because we all loved music. Where we arefrom, we are the music kids; a lot of us were in bands. We consumed records,talked about them incessantly and went to shows as much as we could. Seeingshows is where music became accessible to us, a lot of the bands we were seeingwere smaller, young, and poor. They just got in a van, and made somethinghappen, not only that, but they did it with a great attitude, they weregenerally psyched to see people from towns they weren't from at their shows. Wewould listen to bands like Black Flag, or Fugazi, and see how SST records, andDischord did things, how anything could be done on your own, as long as you hadthe will and organization. We started noticing a lot the bands we liked wereall on the same kinds of record labels, Like Merge or Sup Pop, labels that didthings their own way and made things work. In the meantime we started our ownbands, we would see our friends bust their ass to find a space to practice, putall their free time into writing songs, beg venue owners to let them play, andget all their friends to come see them. Then they would spend all their moneyto get a record made, they would have them sitting there in boxes in theirbedroom or their apartment, and then the band would break up. They would bebummed that they had to look at this graveyard of unsold records that cost themall the money they had. Ryan and I had this vision, that we could take theknowledge we had from being in bands, working in the music industry, constantlylistening to music, being passionate about our friends' music and thewillingness to put some hard work into something despite expecting littlereturn, and turn that into something that could benefit our group as a whole.If we could pool our resources and our contacts and let each other know aboutpitfalls, what worked and what didn't work. We could start a record label. Wecould do it with a realistic approach and set small goals for ourselves, solittle by little, we could keep moving forward. For us the key is to keep ourgoals realistic and attainable, believe in ourselves, and do things that welike, we don't look at it as a way to get rich; we just want to be able helpour friends continue to make music we want to listen to.

James: Tellme about your partnership with Ryan?

Mike: So Ryan and I are really close friends. We have a mutual respect for eachother. Ryan is a quiet genius, the dude can play any instrument, and he’s a wizwith sound. When we started KHR, he was doing a great job producing andengineering records on his own out of the practice space he shares with ¡NoPasaran! and Secret Country. Between our friends he's our go to guy for anythingthat has to do with sound. Me on the other hand I'm different, I work atMaxwell's in Hoboken. I go to shows a lot; I'm talking to people in bands,booking agents, managers, and label reps on a regular basis. I am able tosee what the needs are for people in bands. It really helps us grow ournetwork of friends and like-minded people. I gravitate to anyone who has a DIYattitude about things, anyone who isn't trying to just make a quick buck.People who make decisions based on passion and their heart. Generally those arethe people I want to hang out with, talk about music with, and ultimately workwith. Also I'm a get-off-the-couch-and-go-do-something guy. When Ryan and Isaid to each other, “Hey dude- lets just start a record label”. We both knewthat would actually happen.

James: Howdoes the partnership work? Do you handle different parts of running things? Isthere something you individually work on?

Mike:Ryan generally does the technical stuff, if a band wants to record with us,he's available to do produce their record, like he did with ¡No Pasaran¡'s'Porter In The Making". He manages the website, until we can get a niceprofessional one. He currently does the accounting stuff, handles theInventory, talks to the Record manufacturers I do most of the PR stuff,work with the bloggers and the journalists. I work with ourpromotions team; we are constantly looking for new music. So that takes up alot of time as well. I try to reach out to other venues whenever I'm out oftown. However, we talk a lot and pick up the slack for each other when theother person is too busy.

James: Myinitial introduction to you and the label was through ¡No Pasaran! How did youhook up with them?

Mike:Well, let's see. Eric and I have been best friends since we were in 5th grade;we went to High school together played in bands together. Romel is fromKearny, NJ too, Just like Eric, Ryan, myself and a lot of the KHR bands. He'sbeen in bands like Dog Tired and They Fought Back, local bands that were doingthe same thing the KHR bands are doing now. It’s a bloodline that keeps goingback. Those are the bands we saw play live, or looked at their 7 inches andsaid - I want to do that! Tom, the drummer, was in theawesome Jersey City Band, The American Watercolor Movement (among amillion other bands). His musical taste and sense of humor clicked withnot only the band but us as well as soon as we met. We've all worked atMaxwell's together at some point in time. We planned on workingwith them from the start, but wanted to make sure we did it at theirpace. ¡No Pasaran! is enjoying a much more active time now then they havebeen in the past couple of years, I like to think that the stuff we are doingwith them helps them stay motivated and want to keep making music, whichis awesome because everyone who hears or sees them loves them, because they puttheir heart out there with every show and every release. That band alone is areally good example of why Ryan and I wanted to start a record label.

James: "Porterin the Making" is a favorite of the blog, which begs the question. Arethey going to be doing an LP with you in the future?

Ryan:Actually, we haven't discussed future releases much. At the moment, thoseguys are busy plugging away with live shows and pushing "Porter". Of course, we'd love to do an LP down the line - or possibly just anotherEP like "Porter". In the end it's really up to the ¡No Pasaran!Guys, and we'll be more than happy to help them in any way we can.

James: Whatare the chances of a re-issue of "Credentials"?

Ryan:Technically, it would be just an "issue" of Credentials, as the albumnever really saw an official release. We sent out a few copies as part ofthe reward system that we did with the Kickstarter for "Porter," sothere are a select few individuals who actually own a physical copy of therecord, and I do have a few more copies laying around - so it is possible thatit could see a proper release in the somewhat near future. I engineeredthe record myself, so I have a bit of a personal stake in it, and would love tosee it come out. We've been hoping the mystery would build around it -the fabled lost ¡No Pasaran! Record. So we'll see what the guys want to do, andtake it from there. Hell, the Beach Boys' "Smile" finally justcame out, so maybe it's time "Credentials" saw the light of day too.

James: Youused "Kickstarter" to help get "Porter in the Making" out?What are your thoughts on using that platform? Do you think fans share aresponsibility in getting the bands records made?

Ryan: Ithink the platform is fantastic! It really gives DIY groups a chance to do somethings that they ordinarily may have been prohibited from due to financialrestrictions. Of course fans share some responsibility in producing newmaterial. After all, without them, there's no market and no demand foranything we're trying to do. The Kickstarter platform allows fans,especially on this DIY, grass roots level, to really become part of the processand show their support in a way that can truly benefit the artists in a directway. When you boil it down, it's really just a glorified pre-sale withsome extra benefits for people who choose to get involved, and allows us thegauge the interest in a project before it's completed. With "Porter",the fans clearly showed plenty of interest in new ¡No Pasaran! material; wewere able to fund most of the project through it. It was a great successfor us, and we'll definitely use it again in the future, however, it seems thatalmost everything is funded using Kickstarter these days. It's reallyexploded out of nowhere in the last year. I think it's important to usethe platform sparingly, and not for every single thing you do. Otherwiseit becomes like the pay-to-play system where you're asking your friends to buytickets for your show or vote for your band every day to the point where fanslose interest very quickly.

Krakdown - S/T 7 Inch (Re-issue)

Excitement arrived at my doorstep today when my delivery from State of Mind Recording finally arrived. I had ordered the record back in early October and wondered if would ever show up. Krakdown had been a favorite of mine since my infancy on the New York Hardcore scene. Having seen them countless times, they more than earned that favoritism.

Krakdown existed from 1985 until around 1990 and went through numerous lineup changes including a hard to find first demo with future Crumbsuckers frontman Chris Notaro. The band played fast, raw Hardcore in a time when most of their contemporaries were experimenting with Metal. Known for their amazing live sets,

they played countless shows with the likes of Straight Ahead, Breakdown, Killing Time, Altercation and countless others. Though often over looked or under appreciated by Hardcore revisionists. Anyone who played with them, saw them live or hung out with them, can attest to just how amazing they were. Jay was just an amazing front man.

The 7 inch includes the original material from the Common Cause self titled 7 inch EP along with two additional tracks "Ignorance" from Revelation Records "The Way it is" Compilation and "Krakdown" from their 1988 demo. Though they haven't added any new tricks such as remastering the sound. Krakdown is one of the kind of bands that probably wouldn't benefit from such. Krakdown were always a band that were at their best in a live uncontrolled setting. Thus embodying the raw energy of what Hardcore was. Whether you were a fan back then or just want a taste of the raw energy of 80's Hardcore; I suggest you get this. James Damion

Invisible Lines - Wise Up EP

With all the amazing music flooding my mailbox recently you'd think it was Christmas here at UBRS. As more and more submissions come my way I find myself having trouble focusing my thoughts on one particular release. That is until today. I decided to take some time to devote my thoughts and praise to one particular release that's been in heavy rotation for here for or over a month now.

Invisible Lines hail from Kearny, NJ and have been building a reputation as a "must see/hear" band since their start in 2007. Blending different elements of rock that vary from Indie, Punk and Post Core. Each element coming together to bare very good results.
Though "Wise Up" was released back in 2010 (KillingHorse Records). Invisible Lines is a relatively new band to my ears and though it's not what you would consider a new release. It is certainly one that I felt deserved attention.

The EP opens with "Medula", a track that immediately puts the listener on alert. It's frantic pace is a total adrenaline rush. I found myself dancing around spasticly as if I were some outcast "Peanuts" character. Jangly, frantic and a bit eccentric while still holding on to a sense of agility. It's an attention getter to say the very least. "Painmaker" takes a similar approach with more fluid results. "Clean the Mess" is a little more relaxed but still contains a lot of the excellent riffs your treated to throughout. "2 Stops 1" mixes more great vocals and a mix of choppy and driving guitar mixes. The EP finished up with "Release" a track that seems to benefit from a battle of musically split personalities. Relentless, the record never gets lazy or allow the listener to leave the edge of their seat. Throughout the record I felt a lot of different influences, including Quicksand, Fugazi, At The Drive Inn and others. Those influences however, never overshadowed any of the bands sound, originality or overall excellence. James Damion

I just picked up a copy of this Lp and man am I happy that I did. The music is punk yet quirky and interesting in the same way that bands like Wire took basic punk rock of the late 70's early 80's and morphed it into post punk... Leather Leather feels like post punk for the new age...Dave G.

Freddy Alva shares his thoughts on the upcoming Re-Issue of the New Breed Compilation.

In 1989 Freddy Alva and
Chaka Malik of New Breed Fanzine unleashed an epic tape compilation that featured an astounding
thirty-five songs from twenty of
New York's very best established and up and coming Hardcore acts. After more than twenty years, a fair share of bootlegs and a very active Facebook page dedicated to it's memory; Freddy's recently reborn label is giving it a much deserved and proper re-issue. (For those of you that just went on Ebay to find a tape recorder, not to worry. The re-issue will be available in both Vinyl and CD formats.) As the days to it's release near I got in touch with my old friend to share some thoughts on the epic nature of it's release. Here's what he had to share. James Damion

James: There's been a lot of nostalgia and bootlegs regarding New Breed through the years. When did the decision to make it official happen?

Freddy: I've been thinking about doing a proper reissue for a while, ever since putting it up as a free download in '08. I felt that the compilation deserved a better fate than just an MP3 download & even though I included tons of memorabilia on the website/facebook page for the comp; an actual physical release would put it in its proper context. This all happened to coincide with me re-starting my old label up again. I decided to bring an old friend, Ryan Sikorski from Lush Life, in on the project.
I wouldn't feel comfortable with anybody else but us doing it, not that I'm a control freak, but this had to done just right. Myself & the people that worked on it, knew that we had to get a certain look & feel to it & I think we did justice to it: the final product is a fitting tribute to how NYHC (& our youth) was in the late '80s.

James: What about the choice to make it a vinyl release?

Freddy: From day one vinyl was the preferred format. Another old friend, Daryl Kahan (who sang for a band on the comp), did an incredible re-mastering job that begged for analog reproduction, so the Lp format was the way to go. He also did an amazing layout for the Lp & Cd. We are including the original full-size 20-page booklet that came with the tape plus a photo collage/liner notes. It all just looks better full-size, not to take anything away from the digipak cd version, but the lp will also include 4 extra tracks not on the original comp plus a "surprise" voice over from a CBGB's regular that some of you might remember.

James: Had there been any other label interest along the way? Or was this a Wardance release from its inception?

Freddy: Several labels approached me in the past couple of years about putting it out, but to be honest,
I just couldn't give this up to anyone else. Something that is, for all intents & purposes, my baby.
I know how to put out records & luckily I found the backing to fund this project, along with the technical know-how from good friends to do a quality release. Ryan Lush Life is incredibly supportive, he basically said: "Freddy, this is your vision & we'll do whatever it takes [or costs) to get it done". This whole thing is costing a pretty penny, but the end result far outweighs the decision not to outsource the compilation to any other label.

James: Will Chaka Malik be involved in any way?

Freddy: I got in touch with Chaka about 3 years ago about my plans to put up the comp for download & a possible reissue somewhere down the line. He was cool with the website/download, but was hesitant with the reissue. His argument being of how hard would it be to track down all the bands for approval & how will they be compensated plus the logistics of dealing with a record label; his past major label involvement (being in a band that got signed) had soured him on the whole music business. I let it go at the time, but then at the beginning of the year, when it looked like I could realistically do the LP. I sent him an e-mail refuting all his doubts: 1) I am in touch with all the bands on the comp, they are all more than enthusiastic for the thing to come out. 2) I'll make sure everyone on the comp gets a copy 3) I am putting it out so the buck stops with me. I got his new e-mail, through a mutual friend, & sent him my reasonings. I never heard back , so I can assume he doesn't care/is ok with it or he never received my e-mail. I sure hope it's the former, as he was the co-creator of the comp back in '88. Hopefully we'll be in touch soon & I can send him copies of this testament to an incredible time & place that we were lucky to be a part of.

James: Are all the original tracks going to be featured?
Any new surprises ?

Freddy: All the original 35 songs are re-mastered on the Lp & Cd. The only difference is that the Lp will have 4 extra tracks: 2 by All For One, a band that was supposed to be on the comp, who says you can't rewrite the past? as well as 2 live tracks from Life's Blood with Sean Murphy singing @CBGB's in '88. As well as the aforementioned "surprise" voice-over. We are also doing an alternate silk-screened Lp cover (200 made) with the New Breed logo in Wild Style graffiti letters.

James: How hard was it to track down all of the bands? Were their any permission or legal issues involved?

Freddy: Like I said earlier, I am in touch with all the bands, at least 1-2 members of each band. I talked to Bill Willson from Blackout records, who's a lawyer now, about his opinion on if I should get contracts or any other legalities drawn up. He basically said that is such a minimal pressing (1,200 lp's/ 1,000 cd's) & I am doing everything out in the open; there's no need at this level to do any of that stuff. The whole thing is costing a lot of money, of course we hope to recoup, but the main thing is that it comes out the way we envisioned it.

James: Aside from Wardance, how will you be distributing the record?

Freddy: Right now, the 2 main distributors that we'll be dealing with is Revelation Records & Phantasm Imports. Mailorder will be through Wardance & Lush Life. The postage is gonna be ridiculous to send a 2X12" plus 20-page booklet, especially to Europe, so we are encouraging people to get it wholesale from those distributors. I can also do smaller quantities, so any DIY distributors can contact me.

James: Judging from the fact that the New Breed comp was basically launched due to your wanting to do something with the band Absolution. Will Wardance be releasing their future LP?

Freddy: Well, I can thank Absolution for (once) again inspiring me. Their '08 reunion shows encouraged me to start talking about the comp, then putting it up online, starting my record label up again... all the way to what we're talking about now, the reissue. They are in the midst of recording an Lp now for a really cool label, don't know if I'm supposed to mention the name, but you'll hear all about it once it's ready. I talked to them about the possibility of doing a 7" with new songs & they're into it, but now all the focus is on the upcoming Lp. I would be more than honored to do the 7", especially since recently interviewing Djinji & Gavin for the upcoming New Breed documentary that I'm working on with my friend John Woods. It's amazing how they can put everything in perspective, about things that happened 20-odd years ago, & the impact it had on our lives. Everything we're doing is not retro or nostalgia 'cause it comes from a place that's real. Djinji had a great quote when I saw him last: "Those days were great, I don't want to live in the past, but it's good to know we can revisit them & take what we need for the persons we are today".

James: You mentioned John Woods and the documentary. How did that opportunity come along? Who are some of the people you talked to? When can we expect the doc to be issued. Do you plan on having a screening at John's Nitehawk Cinema?

Freddy: The New Breed Documentary came about from talking to John Woods about having a record release party at his newly opened cinema in Brooklyn called Nitehawk. He suggested: "why don't we throw some live footage from the bands on the comp up on the screen?". That quickly escalated into hey, why don't we interview some of the band members that are still around & people that participated in the scene at that time. At present, we're trying to make a full-fledged documentary incorporating the interviews/live footage/photo & flyer collages plus a narration. Kinda ambitious, but we're trying to edit a workable rough cut to screen for people. The plan is that if we can get some backing down the line, we'll aim for a professional DVD release.

We did about 12 interviews so far with people like Djinji Brown, Gavin Van Vlack, Dave Stein, Carl Killing Time, Brendan Bad Trip, Bill from Blackout Records, Chris in Effect 'zine plus 5 others. It's a good mix of people that played on the comp back then, some did record ran labels/fanzines or just hung out & supported the scene in those times. We got some great material & I don't think there's been a NYHC documentary that's so specific to the years of '87 to '89. I know there's footage from the early 80's scene around & there's a NY documentary from the mid-90's. I think this illuminates an era that for many was a key turning point when CBGB's stopped having HC matinees & the scene splintering into various factions, at which point many people started choosing sides or left the scene altogether.

We were hoping for a mid-November screening date, but the reality of doing hours of editing while holding down full-time jobs/family obligations has revealed itself. We are trying just get it done & not stress out about a deadline. Like I said earlier, it will be a rough cut, until we can the find proper backing; hint, hint! Irregardless, we are committed to see this through; the stuff we've shot is golden & deserves to be preserved & documented. Once everything is in place, we will have the screening at Nitehawk Cinemas with Guest DJ's/Record Giveaways/Drink specials like the Raw Deal Dirty Martini or the Life's Blood Orange Mimosa! Dischord has been kind enough to release this awesome collection of Void songs and for that I say Thank You!

What you get is the complete never officially released 20 song Hit and Run session from 1981 along with the first 1981 Inner Ear Demo ( including the Flex Your Head songs and the songs that ended up on the Condensed Flesh 7"), two out-takes from the 1982 Inner Ear session, and a couple live songs.

Overall this is a great collection of songs with top notch sound quality, as would be expected from the mighty Dischord label. The Hit and Run session in particular is killer...a must have Lp...Dave G.

These Branches from Long Beach Island New Jersey are a 2 piece punk band featuring Nick Hertzberg (guitar/vocals) amd Bryan Batiste ( drums / vocals).

These Branches excellent new ep "The Payoff"gets off to a strong start with the opening track"Profiteer" which brings the Minutemen to my mind, however on the remaining 3 songs on this ep These Branches switch gears a bit and develop a more 90's Emo sound in the vein of bands like Small Brown Bike. Overall I am impressed by These Branches ability to write quirky yet hook filled songs that will keep the listener on their toes from start to finish.

The Nolan Gate

One of New Jersey's longest running metal monsters has awakened from a 4 year slumber to unleash it's newest album "Alchemy" on the unsuspecting masses.

The Nolan Gate sticks to what they do best on this 7 song album which means you get big angry choruses, heavy rumbling bass, pounding drums and wave after wave of pummeling riffs to keep your head banging. The songs on this new album also have a bit of a looser feel to them, and Paul Andress throws in a few real nice black metal influenced riffs especially in the song Swordsman. I also feel that the vocals on Alchemy are the best that the band has delivered to date.

The Nolan Gate have been pounding it out on the Jersey club scene for 10+ years and in my opinion they are criminally under-appreciated. Please show the band some love and purchase a download of "Alchemy" for a measly $2.00 from their bandcamp page. Blue Chip Village - Self Titled EP

"What if Craig Wendren of Shudder to Think decided to start a Jazz fueled Jam band?" That's the question I had to ask myself upon listening to Brooklyn's Blue Chip Village. The answer to that question and many more can be found on this gem.

The record opens with "Gusto". A song that notifies the listener that their ears are about to be treated to something very special. Ripe with wiry guitars, falseto vocals and a deep bass/drum sound. The overall range and eccentricities are impressive to say the least.

On "Two and the Tag" Mr. Gesualdi plays both
Mad Hatter and Ringleader with his soaring vocals blaring the chorus
"Blue electric tango / Bearing sweet mango".
All is we're treated to some of the sweetest eccentricities of soaring guitars and falling drums.
The EP comes to a close with "The Biggest Stopwatch You could Ever Imagine" which begins with the vibe of dark, bluesy Jazz cafe. Smoothed out vocals matched with the feel of a stand-up bass and a guitar weeping over its bourbon .

Here is an EP that caught me a little off guard but had me wishing for more. Blue Chip Village is not only worth looking into but a band I would really love to watch grow and expand. Their potential seems limitless. James Damion

Ressurection - I Am Not Discography

I can go all the way back to the days of

My Space being a relevant networking site (Maybe four or five years) when I first heard chatter about a possible

Ressurection Discography.

As more and more time passed my excitement, along with my hopes, faded. Now, thanks to Deathwish Records,

"I Am Not" Ressurection's complete discography is finally here. The bands entire output has been remixed and remastered. Something their album
"I Refuse" was in desperate need of.
The sound is excellent, bringing new life to a lot of the songs. Aside from the album, the bands S/T and Culture EP's, Compilation, Radio and other live tracks are included. Ressurection hailed from New Jersey and featured former and future members of 108, Lifetime, Deadguy,
Kid Dynamite, Paint it Black, Texas is the Reason, The Van Pelt, Jets to Brazil and others. As the band and its sound evolved they went from a more traditional HXC sound to a darker, heavier, more Metal influenced sound. It was an interesting and extremely influential evolution. The X2LP comes on white vinyl with a gatefold cover.

The band has reunited to play a handful of shows including This is Hardcore in Philly over the summer.

Thesongs are marked by excellent musicianship and production. None of which eraseany of the songs raw energy. Though My Rifles sound is firmly planted in the band's hardcore routes.

Theydon't rely on old tricks or safe avenues to achieve their sound. MixingHardcore with Metal while adding different elements and angles that deliverpowerful results.

Therecord opens up with "Fall On Your Sword", which has a fast, straight up,menacing hardcore sound. For someone who hasn't been involved in music formore than twenty years, Jason's voice hasn't lost any of the venomous appeal heoriginally displayed with the band Life's Blood.

Lews dark and murky bass linesreally shine on the track and Andy Guida show why he's one of the most soughtafter drummers in Hardcore.

Thenext track "By the Grave of God" slowly grinds the listener underheal. The sound is dark and ruthless with its twists and turns, highlightingHobi-One's guitar prowess.

Sidetwo opens with "Stars" a short, too the point burst of power that'sdone nicely.

Stormingthe Gatekeeper", my first taste of the bands sound, is still my favorite.

Theyseriously click on all cylinders here. Showing the bands musical range andability to take chances. The guitar work on here is Maidenesque. I was justfloored.

Recordedby the bands drummer Andy Guida with Artwork by the legendary Sean Taggart. Therecord comes on clear vinyl. My Rifle's debut also marks the return of FreddyAlva's Wardance Records.

Suspect - You Brought This Upon Yourself EP

On the bands debut EP
New Jersey's Suspect deliver a fast, raw, unrelenting sound that grabs hold like a rabid dog clenching it's victims throat.
The band mixes Punk, Hardcore and Thrash rather well. The guitar work displayed here is particularly impressive and make for a perfect partner to the singers throat ripping growls. I'm wondering if the band has heard of Rorschach considering the EP will draw immediate comparisons to the legendary band.
Each of the seven songs carries a similar flag into battle with crushing results.
However, I felt "Kill the Host" set itself apart with it's unique and somewhat misleading bass intro. The EP was recorded during one session at Backroom Studios in Rockaway, NJ.
A great idea considering how the recording really shows off their raw quality. This is a band I'd be very interested in checking out live. If you like it rough. This is definitely the stuff. James Damion

Sheer Terror - Spite

Not much has changed since Sheer Terror formed back in 1984 and with their first release in almost fifteen years, it doesn't look as if Paul Bearer has mellowed with age.
Spite finds the band in top form, delivering Reverend Paul's signature misery, bitterness, depression and dark wit.
The record opens with
"Blue Shadows Will Fall" which features epic guitar parts and a chorus you'll find yourself growling to immediately. The next track. "Heresy on the Monkey Bars" is so dark and chaotic that I can only describe it as beautiful.
It's amazing when a band can capture a mood so perfectly. Neither song will, however, prepare you for the records B side. Here, the band covers the Old 97's "Salome" rather perfectly. The song choice and its delivery throws the listener a most unexpected curve. It's a rally cry to say the least.
One that will surely elicit countless sing alongs and pile ons.
Fans of Sheer Terror know what they're in for. They know exactly what to expect each and every time. It's brutal, angry, miserable.
It's fucking Sheer Terror.

Cinema Cinema - Shoot The Freak EP

On "Shoot the Freak" Brooklyn's Cinema Cinema put forth three noisy yet diverse tracks that quickly make their way into your subconscious and ricochet around like a stray bullet gone mad.
The EP opens with
"Lady Abortion" a song so dark and phrenetic you would think it was suffering from schizophrenia.
I can't help but draw immediate comparisons to bands such as Unsane and early Helmet.
"Please to Meet You, Anesthesia" is a much calmer offering with a chorus that has you singing along almost immediately, showing the bands diversity and ability to shift gears seamlessly.
The third track "Day Leash"
by far my favorite, seems to capsulate the best elements of the first two songs to craft one excellent offering. There are lots of different sounds, angles and vibes on the track.
None of which seem to prepare the listener for the descent it spirals towards in the end.
It's eccentricities make for an epic ending. It's unpredictably is notable.
Here is a band that really feels as if it is still growing and finding its sound. Something that I think most will really enjoy being witness to. Engineered by the legendary Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios. The band plans on selling physical copies at shows while the realease will be available on itunes and all the major digital outlets as of Tuesday, 10/11/11.

Hardcore is a way of life for thousands of band members and fans all over the world. Here, New York City's hardcore movement is represented in all of its outspoken, opinionated, and often contradictory variety. Participants are shown with friends, spouses, even children, performing, dancing, and hanging out. They also explain in their own words and lyrics to songs what they think hardcore is all about.From moments of quiet intimacy to the controlled mayhem of live shows, Making a Scene documents in a unique way this flourishing and often misunderstood underground style."

Having picked up the original version at New York City's fanzine mecca See Hear back in 1989. (Only to sell it on Ebay along with most of my cherished fanzine collection ten years later.)
I was fully aware of "Making A Scene" and its status among fanzines of its time. The original was a
must-have document of our own scenes history. A time capsule of sorts. It loomed pretty large over a lot of the NYHC fanzines being published at the time with it's slick look and content.

Fast forward more than twenty years since its original release in 1989 and an expanded edition returns with over two hundred images. (More than double the original seventy-nine featured.)
The updated commentary helps to expand on its original ideas, giving the book a sense of perspective.
I found some of the original insights from Gavin Van Vlack, (NY Hoods, Absolution) to be quite moving. I also found Brendan Rafferty's (SFA) 2011 assessment of "Who were Hardcore kids?"
to be dead on. "We were homeless street kids. Affluent suburban kids. Left Wing, Right Wing, Illiterate, Intellectual, drug users, straight edge and so on." "There were countless different personalities and beliefs, but we all had one thing in common." "For whatever reason, we didn't fit in the normal world, so we created our own."
There's a somewhat surprising foreword by Freddy Cricien who was only ten years old when "Making A Scene" began its course. However his story and contribution to both the book and Hardcore in general is priceless.
Though "Making A Scene" doesn't cover a wide array of the opinions, viewpoints, characters and bands.
It does do an excellent job with those it chooses.
If you had a copy or lost yours somewhere down the road, failed to pick one up when it originally hit the streets or want to get somewhat of an understanding of what it was like, I very highly recommend picking up a copy. James Damion

X Marks the Spot

I had just gotten in touch with JJ of the Aquarian a couple of days prior to see if I could get a shot at covering some shows for them. When I got the green light I sent over a list of upcoming shows that peeked my interest. To my surprise and glee the letter X came up almost instantly.
I was well aware of the bands history and the current "Los Angeles" tour. When I couldn't accept the Saturdays Irving Plaza show due to prior commitments, I was bestowed with a pass to Maxwell's that very night. Perfect considering the club is just blocks from my home and I'd be able to catch them in a much more intimate setting.

As I walked into the room the film "The Unheard Music" was in full swing. In all of my years hanging out at Maxwell's, I have yet to see a movie screening. The whole vibe was that of some secret religious ceremony. A large number of worshippers seated on the floor interacting with the screen as if a sermon were being given. The crowd was older than I'm used to seeing there. Not a shocker considering X released the album Los Angeles over thirty years ago. There was one very animated character who was front and center to the screen that seemed to hang on every word often flailing his arms, singing along and even flipping the bird when the film focused on the A&R head that failed to sign X due to their harsh, unmarketable sound.

As the screen went up the crowd moved forward in anticipation of the mighty X.

I found a spot
(at least I thought) and got ready for what was about to happen.

The band took the stage to the cheers of the crowd.
The original lineup, intact and looking, pretty damns good. The band quickly launched into their set with the opening track to Los Angeles
"Your Phone's Off the Hook, But You're Not" and just raised the bar from there. As for me,
I was pitted between two very loving younger couples throughout the entire set. My positioning didn't allow for many creative shots.

At one point I actually saw an opening and jumped on the stage to get to the right side.

"Gotta get those shots of John Doe!!!" Yet as soon as I got back on the floor I found myself being scolded by some old timer who was filming the whole thing on his cell phone.
(The same guy that was yelling at the movie screen while filming it earlier. It seems I had gotten in front of his pal who was about a foot taller than me. Being the peacekeeper I am I diffused whatever Johnny filmmaker was yelling about and quickly found my old, familiar spot waiting for me. A song or two later I was so enveloped by the sounds of X, the thought of getting the prize winning photo of the night had completely left the room.

By the third song Xene who had looked a little stationary in the beginning kicked into high gear. Billy Zoom loomed large and carried the same swagger as in the bands heyday.
John Doe stood defiantly as he blasted through song after song and DJ Bonebreak pounded away in the background. Old classics such as "Johnnie Hit and Run Paulene". "Soul Kitchen", "Sex and Dying in High Society" and "The Unheard Music"

All sound refreshingly new without losing their old Punk charm. Before the night was over they gave an acoustic gift in "See How We Are" and even came back for a short but blazing encore. As the set ended Billy Zoom dipped into his pocket to reach for his camera. Continuing his ritual to get shots of the adoring fans the band shared the night with.
(Pretty cool if you ask me.) Shortly after the set I got to talking with the bands manager. He told me to stick around to meet the band and get some extra shots with them. I somehow ended up getting into a good conversation with Al Crisifulli of Dromedary records (Something about making difference, volunteering, leaving a positive foot print.) and before I knew it, X had left the building. Needless to say, it was another memorable night at Maxwell's. James Damion

Since their debut in 2002 Static Radio have come a long way but not without taking some heavy hits.
It's been almost 10 years since they got on this ride called "punk rock" and they show no signs of getting off or giving up. What makes Michael Santostefano and Vic Castello, original members and main songwriters, keep going?
Here's some stories shared and questions asked on a September afternoon in my apartment.
Shannon Perez

Mike: Did you hear The Arteries do the
Dead Milkmen song? Its "Dean's Dream"?

Vic: It's coming out soon on a split with us.

Shannon: No Way! I love The Dead Milkmen! What other songs are on it?

Mike: We do a demo version of "Last Year" and it's actually Chris Scanlan's last recording with us which is so weird to say.

Shannon: You have a new album, "We Are All Beasts". It's a bit of a leap from your earlier albums.....

Mike: Yeah, there's nothing fast. It's definitely different but it wasn't a conscious thing.

Shannon: It's a lot darker and more emotional than your past stuff. Is this the album you would like to be taken more seriously?

Mike: Well, my life changed and my life has changed since then. As you get older life get's harder. Relationships end, people get married, people fucking die. When I was 22 my reference on life was,"dude's on tour can be total dicks, yeah" and that was all I really had to say. I never had to deal with death or deal with a relationship that was flawed and fucked up on both sides. It's not meant to be shocking. I'm just like anybody. I'm writing what I know and that's what I knew at the time. Me and Vic both still live those lives. We're still scared. There's a bigger risk involved now. Our friends are going off and pursuing careers and we're still in that band trying to make it.

Me and Vic went through hating all of our albums at some point but I put this on and I like it. I'm proud of it. It was just a natural progression. It's not like our next album is gonna be a rap/rock album. I really don't think it's miles away from our first record,
but I hated some of that first record. After every vocal take I felt like I was going to keel over and die. I didn't know what I was doing.

Shannon: So, the song, "Between Hello and Goodbye," what's that about?

Mike: Man, my shit isn't about anything. I don't really think about it. I don't look at a chair and say I'm going to write about that chair. I never sat down and said I'm gonna write a song about my dad. Everything subconsciously makes sense afterwards.

Shannon: Do you consider yourself a writer?

Mike: Na' man. I'm just a dude with a dick hole.

Shannon: So, you have a new line-up. Tell us about it.

Vic: I like this stuff now and I love this line-up. Our live shows are as good as it's ever been. We got Chris Krause. He's a drummer from Florida and played with a band we toured with Arm The Poor. He's also in Devout and Bible Dinosaurs. Charles Chaussinand played with No Harm Done and Off-Sides.

Shannon: How did they change the dynamic of the band?

Mike: I just think Chris Krause saved us. Ya know, your as good as your drummer. He's so, so solid. We were borderline nervous trying to get him in the band.

Vic: The way we wrote the album is me and Mike demo'd the songs with me on drums, we sent it to Chris and when it came time to record I was almost giddy cause he added a whole new thing to it. Then we had a few second guitarists. Dave from Banquets went to Europe with us but he couldn't do it so we got Charles Chaussinand for The Arteries tour we did. He's super amazing and with him we are just unstoppable live.

Shannon: Why did you switch from Black Numbers to Kiss of Death for the new release?

Vic: Well, I shopped it around, had a few people interested but we decided to give Kiss Of Death a try and there's no hard feelings. We love all those guys from Black Numbers. I think this is our best record to date. Hands down.

Shannon: What's next for Static Radio?

Mike: I don't know. Everything else about music is debatable and the only thing that rules everytime is playing, recording and making it happen. It sounds cliche' but if that's why you're not doing it at the end of the day and getting managers and making it is your only focus you shouldn't even be in a fucking band. If you're not worried about writing a good song and getting better at what you're doing, what are you doing it for? There's so many fucking bands with all the business shit in order and sponsors but they play a show and I just want to go to sleep. It's so forced. This shit is pouring out of my ass. It eeks out of me. It's just in me and I have no control. I don't have to force it.

Shannon: Anything you want to add?

Vic: Actually, Shannon, the first time me and Mike technically met was August of 1986. Me and Mike were born in the same hospital 3 days apart, same year.

Shannon: Any joint birthday parties?

Vic: I tried it before. It just doesn't work.

Mike: Me and Vic are attention whores.

Vic: That's why we're still in this band. For all the attention.

Mike: I never fuck with his side of the stage and he never fucks with mine, but if he does, there's a battle royale. We're the most egotistical people you'll ever meet. And i kissed a guy....twice. And we support our troops.

Shannon: Are you really too cool to care?

Mike: Oh no. I care very much about the environment, animal rights, free speech..

Vic: And the right to bear arms

Mike: I own a flesh gun. POW! "We Are All Beasts" was released on Tuesday, Sept. 27th.

Ben Franklin Calls it Quits

It is with sadness and the sense of loss that the band Ben Franklin has decided to, indeed, call it quits. The band left us with two amazing records and countless shows that left us both inspired and exhausted. I was lucky enough to catch their last show at Brick City Riot Festival where the band flat out killed it. They left an indelible footprint on the New York/New Jersey music scene and will surely be missed.

Fresh Meat started in May of 2011 and within three weeks started gigging. It has been a stressful couple of weeks filled with tension and angst due largely to the round the clock coverage of Hurricane Irene and the tenth anniversary of 9/11. A combination of houses floating down the river and footage of the Towers going down in the midst of smoke and flames have put me in one of my shitiest moods ever.
So the idea of seeing on of our favorite bands the Night Birds play in Brooklyn seemed to be just the tonic to cure the mopes. As Friday approached and the day wore on I found myself constantly gasping for air as if I was going to have an anxiety attack of something. The humidity didn't seem to help either.

I managed to get to Dave to drive in with the promise of him parking in Hoboken while we drove my car to Brooklyn. As I made my way downstairs he was standing outside the car on the passengers side. Something completely foreign to me. "Dude I hate fucking Hoboken." "I couldn't find a spot." Then came the question that turned my tension to panic "Do you mind driving my car there." Shit, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a bad driver. I get lost or side tracked whenever I go somewhere new and often scare the Bejeezus out of my wife when we go out anywhere. I can handle that. Endangering myself, my vehicle or my spouse doesn't unnerve me in the least.
Taking a friends car and putting his destiny in the crosshairs is a different animal all together.
As I pulled out and adjusted the seat I felt a jolt and took a deep breath. Then, with the turn of the corner, all the tension and anxiety was gone and we were on out. I was psyched to see the Night Birds final show before their European tour and I was finally going to get to see DC's Hardcore outfit Give.
As we rolled into Brooklyn and finally onto Waterbury Street
I felt comfortable amongst the industrial surroundings.
I seem to going to a lot of spots in these less than suburban settings these days. As we pulled in to our spot, Dave turned his head anxiously, "Are you sure we can park here dude?" I let him out to check the signs and even circled the block to look for a more welcoming atmosphere. Only to park in the same exact spot only minutes later.

Acheron's music space is wedged between a small cafe and the bar and makes any basement event look like a trip to the Hilton. I went into the cafe for a coke but all they had was the birch beer shit. I asked Dave if he wanted a beer but it seemed to be the furthest thing from his mind. A crowd was forming outside and it just felt like one of those bad cliche's unfolding. There were a ton of skinny white guys with long, stringy hair, Buffalo Bill mustaches and cut of dungaree jackets. They could have passed as bikers if they had a little meat on their bones. The scene was just old and smelly. The thought of waiting for two bands we had no interest in seeing out in the humid air only to go into a dirty sweat box for the bands we did want to catch just didn't seem like a good idea. Dave was also becoming more and more disconnected. Having no one to talk to while waiting for such misery was enough for me to persuade him to cut our losses and head out of Dodge. As we got back onto the bridge Dave returned to normal and realized it was a good idea. "We'll see the Night Birds when they return from Europe." I said. I'm sure it will be at a cool spot with a better vibe than tonight.

To put an end to my first "No Show" review I want to admit that writing this was just my way of posting some more of my favorite shots of Night Birds. Enjoy. James Damion

Scream - Complete Control Sessions EP

DC based legends Scream are back with their first release since 1993's classic "Fumble". Reunited in 1999 to play a series of shows including one at the DC's Black Cat during the blizzard of 2009. (Yeah, I was there)
Lucky for us they decided to head into the studio to record new material. As I pour over the seven tracks on Control Sessions I can't help but feel this is by far the bands best work to date.

Not to lessen the impact of the bands early work. Records like "Fumble" and "Bang the Drum" were epic recordings that still hold weight decades later. It's just that this record is that good. On Control Sessions
(Recorded live at Dave Grohls Studio 606 in February) the band fires on all cylinders.
It's great to see the original cast of Franz, Pete, Skeeter and Kent, along with the addition of guitarist Clint Walsh. The vocals and guitar work on the record are so good I was shaking my head in awe. All seven tracks have a "Stick to your ribs" effect but "Stopwatch" (The opening track) and "Jamin' at 606" are my absolute favorites. I'd highly recommend this to anyone. Even the most casual Scream fan can love a record that flat out "Rocks".

Excellent Straight forward angry punk / hardcore with a bit of a Germs feel in the stripped down guitar sound. Also, brings more current bands like the Formaldehyde Junkies to mind.

Honestly, not much more to be said about this demo, it's just a solid all around demo that should definitely lead to a 7" release in the near future.

Looks like distro's are selling out of this tape pretty quickly so I would get one fast if you like what you hear...Dave G.

If you are a fan of bands that straddle the alt/punk/hardcore line like Far or even post hardcore bands like Rival Schools or Error Type: 11 then I can present Control to you with my highest recommendation.

"Obsolete Through Automation" is one hell of a well recorded/polished and professional sounding record. Hell, I am not sure that I can even describe just how impressed I am with this cd. The songs are super catchy and powerful with excellent vocals and the overall musicality is well beyond what I would expect from a relatively unknown band from NJ.

At times the music crosses the line into commercial alternative territory but it never remains there long enough to get uncomfortable, and fortunately there's enough grit and post hardcore riffing and bass rumbling to keep things firmly planted in the underground. I've been told that these guys kill live as well, I will definitely have to get off my ass and catch them the next time they play out...Dave G.

This is a review I did over on the Rocket Science blog. Since the Night Birds are a local NJ/NY band I figured I would share the review here as well...Dave G.

To my ears the Night Birds have always sounded like a modern day hybrid of Agent Orange and the Adolescents, and on their first full length album "The Other Side of Darkness" they have done nothing to change my opinion. In fact, they have maintained the surf punk twang of Agent Orange and upped the speed, catchiness and snottiness that always brought the Adolescents to mind, however they have modernized everything and thrown in so many hooks that it will make your head spin...in a good way.

I must say that we have another candidate for the top 10 list of 2011 right here, and maybe even the top spot at that. I'm finding that I can't get enough of this record, and that it just keeps getting better and better with every listen...Highly Recommended...Dave G.

DYS - More Than Fashion (Live From The Gallery East Reunion)

As kids growing up in the 80's bands like DYS, SSD and Minor Threat, just to name a few, were untouchable.
They were Gods that walked on water as far as this wide eyed fifteen year old was concerned. Brotherhood and even the more Metal influenced
Fire & ice were already classics.
As one of the kids that missed seeing those bands by a few years I salivated over the chance to have seen them in their heyday or owned an original copy of Brotherhood. Fast forward twenty five years and the nostalgia of movies and books such as 'American Hardcore' has a good amount of the bands from that era have reformed are touring and recording. This brings me to DYS - More than Fashion. The music is taken from their reunion show at Gallery East in Boston on August 29th 2010. Looking back I really wish I would have taken the invitation to join Dave Stein and friends for the bus trip they took to this show. I'm sure it was memorable to say the very least. As for the record. It covers much of the bands material from both records rather well Dave Smalley and crew are in good form. However, it's rare when a live record captures the emotion and energy of the actual show. Personally I feel the old saying "You were either there or you weren't" best fits here. It's not a bad record but I think the band would have made their fans a lot happier by recording new material. I really don't feel this record does anything to enhance the bands legacy. James Damion

Seaweed - Service Desk 7 inch

Seaweed was always one of those bands that lived outside the shadow of its genre.
Their sound was a mix of post core, punk, indie and what was yet to be copt as grunge. While allowing them to sit comfortably at the table with bands from any of the aforementioned formats. It was their music that set them apart and made them stand out.

On their new single Service Deck/The Weight
(Their first in thirteen years) Seaweed delivers the same hooks, tension and riffage fans are used to while keeping it fresh and not relying on nostalgia or old tricks.
The addition of keyboards on the last thirty-seconds of Service Deck add a new twist that surprisingly works.
The records B-side The Weight carries also has a driving rock sound that carries that classic Seaweed formula while adding a look into what hopes to be more music in the near future. No matter how you approach it this is one hell of a way to cap off the Summer.

Feral Babies - Violent Boredom 7 inch

On their debut 7 inch Tampa Florida's Feral Babies deliver nine songs of fast, angry, aggressive
Hardcore Punk that's reminiscent of first generation Cali bands such as Jodie Fosters Army and the
Circle Jerks. Violent Boredom is a record that really took a few listens to properly digest.
The sound is raw, a bit sloppy and completely lacks in the production department. All short comings that, after a few listens, actually become part of the records charm. You might be a bit curious as to how the band managed to cram nine songs on to a 7 inch record. Well, most of the tracks clock in under a minute. The longest track doesn't even register a minute and a half. Which, unfortunately doesn't allow enough time to distinguish one song from the other. Though the record really fell short of resonating with me. I have to admit, however short lived, it had it's moments. James Damion

Though I would add my two cents to James review of the Feral Babies 7".

Feral Babies play an aggressive straight forward form of hardcore punk that took a few listens to grow on me. The positives are the sometime Ray of Today style lead vocals and strong backing vocals along with the loose rumbling bass lines. At times the Feral Babies remind me of "Christian Club" ( an obscure hardcore band from a few years back that few people have probably heard of , but I would suggest you check them out). As James stated the recording could be a bit brighter and tighter, but hey it's punk rock man...Dave G.

DamionPhoto and The Gerunds Join Forces.

I was hoping to do a little Q and A with Gerunds frontman Peter Cortner on this Fridays benefit show in Philly but time got the best of me.
Instead I'm posting a flyer Pete made with an old picture of mine. As much as I am a fan of Pete's work with Dag Nasty and the Gerunds.
Pete has, on a few occasions, noted how much he loves my photography. I guess we've got a little mutual admiration thing going on.

I met Pete outside of a Staten Island bar on Halloween night a few years back.
He was dressed from head to webbed toe as Kermit the Frog and about to perform a set of
Dag Nasty tunes with my friends The Amber Jets.
I was in awe. As I was about to introduce myself and confess how Dag Nasty changed my life he interrupted, "You're James, the Photographer?" "OMG, I read your blog all the time." "Your work is amazing."
It was a surreal, dream like moment.
Especially considering he was dressed as Kermit the Frog. Regardless of all that history I am honored to have my work, no matter how old, raising awareness for Cancer treatment and of course the Gerunds.

Pete and I will get that interview done one of the days. I can assure that. What started as a project has morphed into a full fledged band. They're playing shows much more consistently and should be releasing new material soon.
So for Pete's Sake, keep an eye out for The Gerunds. James Damion

My Rifle - "This is my Gun."

When former members of Life's Blood (Jason O'Toole), Our Gang (Hobi Klapuri and Lewis Dimmick) got together to start My Rifle it inspired Freddy Alva (The New Breed Compilation) to restart his Hardcore label Wardance Records.
Needless to say, the possibilities for something incredibly special were pretty high. Add drummer/engineer Andy Guida (Supertouch, Altercation and currently Absolution)
to the mix and you've got all the elements for something Epic.
With a record on the way and the return of Wardance records on the horizon I asked Jason and Lewis a few questions about the band and the upcoming release. I greatly appreciate their feedback. James Damion

James: Give me a little background on the band?
What brought you together and what was it that made things click for you as a unit?

Lewis: Facebook brought us together. Hobi and I hung out at a couple of
Life's Blood rehearsals. (Back in the day.)
We thought they were a great band but weren't close friends with them or anything like that. All these years later we started talking to Jason on Facebook and the idea of doing a record came up.
We went through two drummers before finally having Andy from
Altercation / Supertouch / Absolution get the job done. Things clicked with him, I think, because he has the same point of view. He's from the same scene, influenced by the same bands.

James: What made you decide to add different elements and sounds as opposed to doing a straight up Hardcore band?

Jason: My voice has changed considerably over the years, as I have lived in Texas,
Louisiana, and here in Georgia for many years. There’s an unmistakable twang in my vocals now. It’s funny how one’s ear changes over time. New Yorkers now sound nasal and gruff to me, and I don’t notice the softer, Georgia accent at all, as it’s what I’m accustomed to in my home. I plum disremembered how to speak Yankee. So, you have my country and blues influence on the music – which is subtle on the EP but the careful listener will notice elements of Old Hank, Jerry Lee, and Leadbelly in my lyrics and vocals.
Then you have the more obvious metal influences, which one should expect from men who grew up listening to Iron Maiden. The LP we have planned will be more musically diverse. It’s still going to be very much hardcore, but we hope to record a really amazing song Hobi wrote which is nothing short of his masterpiece, more of Lew’s metal-worshipping bass, and I may even play guitar on the punk-blues-blasphemous-gospel songs that seem to come to me in my dreams down here.

Lew: We're just trying to play music that we'd like to hear, drawing on all the music that's influenced us throughout our lives, in this case mostly hardcore and metal. We're all experienced musicians and we set out to do something that was absolutely not half-assed.

James: What led you to choosing Freddy Alva's resurrected label Wardance? What are some of the bands future plans?

Lew: Freddy made the offer and we accepted immediately because he's not only an old friend, but one that has made a lot of value contributions to the NYHC scene.

Jason: The rebirth of Freddy Alva’s NYC based Wardance Records and the formation of MyRifle are really one and the same. Freddy is as much as part of the band as any of us. One of the reasons it has taken us so long to deliver this EP is that we knew it would take a lot of work to be worthy of being a Wardance record.
The cover artwork for our EP, which will be reproduced for t-shirts available from Wardance, is by none other than Sean Taggart. Wes Harvey, who illustrated the Life’s Blood “Defiance” cover has been drafted to come up with something amazing for the LP. Friends of ours who work in film and television are at work on videos for our songs, which should manifest in the usual places, YouTube, Facebook, and possibly this new Google +.

James: Jason, you mentioned an LP. How far down the line are we talking?

Jason: We have never stopped working on songs and easily have enough material for an LP. It is just a matter of everyone finding the time to rehearse and record.
I am planning on recording with the band for the LP and may play some backing guitar as well.

Lewis: We've got some music we'd like to work on at some point but it's impossible to predict if or when we'll ever complete an LP. We might work on some new tunes with Andy in the fall / winter.

James: It's been years since you've recorded. The digital age has brought a lot of changes to how we record. How is Andy helping to bring it all together?

Lew: I'm no expert on recording analog vs digital. But Andy, as I mentioned before, has the same influences, the same point of view, so we were pretty comfortable with him right away, and that allowed us to not settle for anything with which we were not completely happy. For a bunch of stuff that Hobi and I play on the record, we weren't even in the studio on the same day. Jason wasn't even in the same state when he did his vocals. He did them later in Georgia. But that kind of thing can be done with either analog or digital, so like I said I'm no expert.

James: What have been some of the stumbling blocks you've faced along the way? The cancellation of your show with Agnostic Front comes to mind.

Lew: Things not working with our first drummer. Things not working with our second drummer.
Being older, having more responsibilities, struggling to find time that each person could dedicate to the music, rehearsing, recording. We got booked on that AF show without truly realizing how long it would take, when the band lived in NY and our singer lived in Georgia, to get songs together. We weren't able to play that show and feel we were ready to make a strong impression.

James: In closing, is there a date on the release? How will you be distributing it and in what format will it be available?

Lew: The EP shouldn't be too far away. Test presses will arrive soon. Shouldn't be terribly long after that. Freddy, aka the mack daddy, will be taking care of distribution. It's gonna be a 7" EP.

Catching Up with Brian Macko

If you're reading this, and I'm sure you are.
You most likely know Brian Macko.
The former frontman for World Indifference and Voice Or No Voice has been a mainstay on the New York and New Jersey Hardcore scene for ages. Whether he's on stage, in the pit showing his support to his favorite bands during a sing along or at the bar raising his glass to good times and good friends.
You can count on Macko and his 6'6 frame to be in the middle of it all. In 2010 we lost one of the good guys when Brian and his beautiful wife moved to South Florida is search of opportunity and a better life.
Brian recently returned north for a visit.
I was still recovering form surgery and sadly missed out on seeing him when Supertouch played Kearny Irish. I did however manage to send him some questions to see just how well he's adjusted to living in the Florida sun and what he misses most about the Dirty Jerz. Special thanks to Ken Salerno for contributing the amazing shots. I think they more than show off Brian's energy and personality.

James:You recently made it up to see Supertouch at Kearny Irish. Was that the keyreason for your visit?

Brian:Actually, that wasn’t the key reason why I came up to visit, but probablyranked number three on the list. The main reason that I came up to the Jerseyand NYC area was to go to one of my childhood friend’s wedding reception. Heand his wife live out in Albuquerque New Mexico, so that weekend was the firsttime that Ihave seen them since they left two years ago. The second reason that I came upwas to see my family, since family has always been a big part of my life whilegrowing up. The one family member that I made it a point to go and pay a visitto was my Aunt Martha. The justification of why that I made it a point to goand see her was just a couple of weeks ago she was admitted into a nursinghome/rehabilitation center located down in the Lower East side. She is the onlyother member in my family that has the same hereditary eye disease that I have.
This woman has endured such a hard life through countless medical trials andtribulations starting with her vision loss thirty-seven years ago. Now at theage of 60 years old, for she is confined to a wheelchair, and is still legallyblind, but still she has that PMA
(Positive Mental Attitude).

James:Do you have fears about the future, with your own sight and not being able tolive as you're already accustomed to?
If so, How do you look at it and how doyou deal with the aspects?

Brian: Ilost my vision back in 2001 due to a disease called Leber Hereditary OpticalNeuropathy (LHON). My vision has pretty much stayed the same sincethen,

so I really don’t fear myself losing more vision, and this is becausethis disease is dormant.
It’s not supposed to progressively getworse, but you never know what life hands you.
I mean I could walkout the door tomorrow and get hit by a car, or get clubbed in the head by ablunt object, and from there I could lose all my vision due to multipledetached retinas.
What I am pretty much saying is that I try to liveevery day “Day by Day.”
There are a couple of things that I learnedafter I lost my vision. I now learned that I judge people for whothey are, and not what they look like, and that shit also just comes along withmaturity. I have also realized in my life that there is alwayssomeone else out there that has it much worse off than me, so that self pityshit doesn’t apply to me anymore, and this is because I have had this visionimpairment for the last ten years. I mean don’t get me wrong thereare days that I get so frustrated that my vision impairment doesn’t allow me todo certain things, but then again I realize that it is not the end of theworld.

One of the big positives ofliving down here in South Florida is there is a place called the Bascon PalmerEye Institute, and this place is the only place that is doing research on myeye disease. They are doing a study which includes a battery of eyetests, blood work, and questioning the individual who has the LHONgene. I got involved in this study last January, and went back formy second visit last July. I am not getting my hopes up too highthinking that I am going to get my vision back, but I am keeping my fingerscrossed.
The one thing that I could say about how this visionimpairment has changed my outlook on life is that I have become much morepositive, for I mean I use to be a miserable prick when I had my vision, andnow I am a much more positive person.

James:How good was it seeing old friends and band mates, one of which was playingwith Supertouch?  

Brian: Itwas amazing to see all my friends.

Jon Biviano (guitar in Supertouch/Voice or no voice)all that much, but was mad psyched to see him play the shit out of that guitar.There was also another ex-band mate from
World Indifference that actually puton the show and his name is Ed “Ox” Occhipinti
(also owns and tattoos at JinxProof Tattoo), and it was really good shooting the shit with him since wereally haven’t done that in years. I was extremely stoked to see Alf Bartone
(lead vocals in Ex Number Five/The Fire Still Burns and now
plays bass in DamnThis Desert Air), for it was the first time that I caught their whole set, andthat shit was mad powerful. Last but certainly not least, getting to see

Caughtin a Trap was definitely a treat, and this is because playing so many showswith those guys, and seeing them play that night brought back so many memoriesof
Voice or no Voice. It’s pretty funny that when you look at the Caught in aTrap guys at face value, for you would think here’s a bunch of scary tough guysfrom Queens, but in actuality they are just a bunch of nice tough guys fromQueens that play in an amazing band.
Overall, the show was a success for mesince I got to see many people

thatI haven’t seen in such a long time, so a big thanks goes out to Ox and ScottMayers for putting on the show.

James:Were you at all surprised or disappointed about Andy no longer playing withSupertouch?

Brian:Am I surprised that Andy is not playing in Supertouch? The answer tothat one is “No comment.” I am sorry, but I am not going to be the onethat explains why Andy is not playing in Supertouch, for that question shouldbe answered by Andy.
Now, you asked if I am disappointed that Andyis no longer playing in Supertouch, and the answer to that one is“Yes.” I always like to see bands with their original members, andthis is because the original members’ flavor is so pure to the originalsound. I mean don’t get me wrong Dean on Bass, and Rich on drums aredoing an amazing job, but it is just a totally different dynamic. Andyis a tremendous drummer, and an incredible person, so I knew it wouldn’t belong before he was playing in another band. I was lucky enough tosee Andy play in the legendary NYHC band Absolution at the Black N Blue Bowlthis past year.
He sounded awesome like always, and I can’t wait tohear the new stuff that they recorded.

James:Should we start expecting more frequent trips up North in the future?

Brian:I really can’t give you a solid answer on that one, and that is because if I amable to attain a job in the very near future, for then I won’t make it up asmuch as I want to.
I would totally want to make it up as much as possible, butfinancial restraints are what keep me down here. It’s weird, if I have no jobthen I have no money and tons of time. If I have a job then I have the moneybut no time to do anything. So, all I could say is we will take it as it comes.

James:Tell me about the move and what prompted you to move where a lot of people goto die.

Brian:Well, the actual move took place on 10/20/10 at 7:00am in the morning.
My wifeand I got on the road at 7:00am in the morning to head down to Virginia, andthis was because we had to check in with Amtrak’s auto train at noon. Wearrived on time to check in, and get some food; in addition we were able torest up a little bit before getting on the train. The train actually left at4:00 pm, andby 5:30 pm we found ourselves drinking some Sam Adams beers in the loungecar. Wewere served dinner at 7:00 pm which wasn’t all that good, but it did suffice tofill me up for the time being. Dinner was over for us at 8:00pm, so that prettymuch meant that we were headed back to our seats for a ten hour toss and turntype of sleep in these undersized train chairs. These chairs weren’t reallythat undersized, but for my 6 foot 6 inch ass everything seems to beundersized. The last call for breakfast was at 7:00am, and that is when wedecided to get our aching asses down to the dining car. Again, the meal they servedwas not memorable, but did serve its purpose to fill me up.

Now,after breakfast we had a little bit of time to rest until we arrived in SanfordFlorida at 9:00 am. Once we got off the train and into our car, for we had abright idea to call our travel agent back in New Jersey. We asked her to bookus five days at Disney World since we were only a town away and also becausethe moving company that we used wouldn’t be down in South Florida for anotherten days. We arrived in our Disney resort room a little after 11:00 am, and wewere in Magic Kingdom by noon. I am not going to get into great detail aboutthe time spent at Disney World, but let me just tell you when they have thefood and wine tasting at Epcot, for it is a fucking blast.

Ourlast day at Disney World was spent hitting up some rides and getting somefood.

Weleft the park at 1:30pm, and probably got on the Florida Turnpike at 2:00pm.
Our destination was to get to my Uncle’s house in Cooper City by 6:30pm, but wedidn’t actually get there until around 8:00 pm. Fast forward 2 months and somechange later, for its 1/11/11 and my wife and I purchase a town house a townover from my Uncle’s house.

Youasked why I would move down to the place where most people move to just beforethey die, for the answers are love and money. Financially having a mortgage inNew Jersey was draining the both of us, so moving down to South Florida madeperfect sense.
What I mean by this is we were able to buy a place out rightwithout having to get a mortgage, and that alone has relieved a lot of tension.The second reason I mentioned was love. What I mean by this is my wife is ahuge fan of SouthFlorida, so since she loves it down here, for then I will learn to love it too.Don’t get me wrong, Ialso chose to move down here, because we could have probably gone anywhere inthe U.S, butI chose here out of result of having two Uncles down here. Even though I movedaway from my home, family and friends, for I still needed to be around somefamily, so hopefully that explains the justification for the South Floridarelocation.

James:What was the adjustment like? We're there any moments of anxiety or momentswhere you thought, "What the hell have I done?".

Brian:To be completely honest I wake up every day thinking to myself was this theright choice.

Somedays I think that it was, and some days I think it wasn’t. I think that when Iget a job and settle into the job, for then I will be a little more adjusted inliving down here.
Right now being unemployed makes me feel like I am in limbo,so once I attain a job then that feeling will fade. Asfar as living in a new environment goes, for this place has its pros and cons.Some of the pros are: Ilive near mad stores, so my blind ass can walk to all of them if I have to. Welive only 20 minutes away from the beach, airport, and the down town area.
Thetransportation service that they have down here for the handicap is pretty damndependable. Now, the cons are: Things are close, but I would much rather havethem closer like they were in New Jersey. Some days the heat is really fuckingunbearable, so that keeps my ass indoors as much as possible. Now when it comesto the bus system and the Tri-rail, for they both stop running at around11:00pm, so if you’re late just a little bit then you are fucked. If you arelate a little bit then you have to wait around for the next bus or train at4:00am, sothat shit definitely blows.

James:What do you miss most since the move?

Brian:I miss my family and friends the most.

Idefinitely miss New York City, from going to shows, or just walking aroundManhattan.

Imiss the food without a doubt. New York and New Jersey hands down have the bestpizza and bagels. Clifton has the best hot dogs at the
HotGrill, so whenever I come up for a visit that is the first place I like to hitup.

James:Have you managed to find any music or scene to grab hold of since you've beendown there?

Brian:There really hasn’t been much luck of finding any type of seen down here, but Ireally can’t say that I been looking that hard either. There are threeclubs/venues that are pretty close to me in FortLauderdale. A small club called the Poorhouse caters to the local bands, and isprobably comparable in size to Dingbatz in Clifton. The next venue that isstepped up in size is theCulture Room, and you could have touring bands play here, and for example theMisfits are coming through here in a couple of months, but that shit isn’treally the Misfits to me. The third venue is called Revolutions, for I haven’teven seen this place yet, but I know that bands like Thrice are playing herevery soon. There is also the Bank Atlantic Center located in Sunrise where Iwent to see Rush, andthat place reminded me of the Meadowlands in Jersey. There is a place that hasa lot of promise that is located down in Miami, and is called Churchhills. It’snot a big club at all, for it has a decent size stage, Premier League Soccer onall the flat screens, and a very good selection of beverages. Theone knock on this place for me is that it is a little too far for me to get to,especially since I don’t drive due to my blindness.

James:Is there any chance you'll be coming up to play a

Voiceor no Voice reunion show anytime soon?

Brian:I would love to play a reunion show with those guys, but I highly doubt it. That question should definitely be asked to Andy and Biv.
If I had totalcontrol over us playing a reunion show, for our asses would definitely beplaying a reunion show. I did Joke around with Ox about playing a Worldindifference reunion show, and he said anything is possible, so maybe you’ll behearing about that.

James:What are you listening to these days?

Brian: Tobe completely honest with you I have been listening to my Ipod on shuffle, andsports talk radio (790AM The Ticket ESPN Radio) If I had to give you five bandsthat I have been listening too since I moved down here, and their albums. Thisis in no particular order of how they are listed.

Supertouch,their newsongs that they put out on Reaper Records, and all their old stuff. I got stuckon a Supertouch kick since out of the 9 months that I have been down here, forI have been up to see them twice.

TheWait, Ihave been listening a lot to their demo CD with my wife, and that CD reminds meso much of home. That CD is mad catchy, and those guys are the nicest guysaround. I use to play mad shows with them when they had Paul on drums, and theywere called Endgame. When Paul left the band they wanted to continue playingmusic, but they wanted to change up their sound, so I told them that I knew aguy named Sergio Spina. Sergio use to play in a band with me and Mikey back inthe late 90’s called Deny Victoria. He also played in True Zero, My FavoriteCitizen, No love lost, Run like Hell, and Scary Hours, so you could definitelysay Sergio is an experienced drummer. I am only telling you this because Iwould like to think that I had little part in a good band coming together.

RivalSchoolsnew album, Pedals. The new Rival Schools album is fucking amazing. Their firstalbum “United by Fate” was phenomenal, and this album is becoming a closesecond. The last time this band put out a album was close to ten years ago, andin that year I spent most of my time in South Florida. Why did I spend a lot oftime in South Florida during that year was because my girlfriend now wife wasliving down here. Now, its 2011 and Rival Schools puts out another album,furthermore my ass is back in South Florida, so does this seem coincidental?Hmmmm.

Rush- The Best of Rush. Lately I have been listening to a decent amount of Rush. I guessthat kind of seems weird hearing that I am listening to Rush being that I sangin a hardcore band. I guess it has to do with the fact that my brother in lawbought tickets for my wife and I to go see Rush while he was down here in lateMarch. I was totally psyched after seeing them perform, and this is because Ireally wasn’t into them that much, but afterwards I realized that those guysare an amazing bunch of musicians. Listening to them play live totally remindedme of playing with Mikey, Biv and Andy, so that is what made me appreciate themeven more.

Sickof it All - Everything. This band will always be playing on my Ipod or my walkman. I’vebeen listening to this band since I was 12 years old, and shit is not gonnachange any time soon. The first time that I seen this band was September 1993at City Gardens in Trenton. They headlined that show, for Into Another playedan amazing set second, and Rancid kicked the door down to open the show. Theyended up putting that show out on Lost N Found Records named “Live in a WorldFull of Hate”. If you look in the insert you could see me and Mikey with ourarms stretched out, and my arm looks like its ten feet long. Now, that was thefirst time that I’ve seen them, and the most recent time that I caught them wasat the 2011 Black N Blue Bowl this past Memorial Day weekend. Almost 18 yearslater and they are still killing it. That’s why they are built to last.

When setting out to do this blog, speaking to some of the concert photographers
(past and present) that helped to inspire me along the way was one of the key things I wanted to do. Being a photographer myself I knew it wouldn't be easy.
The photographers I've met along the way have always been eager to share their images and thoughts on their favorite bands. But when it came to talking about themselves, their style and approach.
Most would become tight lipped.
In asking Jason House I was a little more confident.
In talking to him at shows he's been both friendly and engaging. His style has a unique perspective and approach that makes the viewer feel as if their part of the story. Jason's work can regularly be seen on Brooklyn Vegan and he recently created a website to showcase more of his work.

James: What was it that drew you to photography?

Jason: It started at an early age. I’ve always has a sense of wanting to document things. During the summer after third grade, I took a museum studies course through my school and that really changed my outlook on things. I’d like to say I actually started shooting that early, but the interest always outweighed the means. We couldn’t really afford a camera, film and processing, so I got in the habit of framing things up in my my head and thinking,
“If I had a camera, it would look like this”. I’ve done that ever since.

James: What was it that made you want to start photographing bands and live events?
Were there any photographers that particularly influenced you? If so, why?

Jason: I cite my lack of camera as the biggest motivator. I was always drawn to live shots in album layouts and I wanted to get the in your face shots like I was seeing in fanzines.
When I did get the chance to start taking a camera to shows, that‘s the sort of thing
I had in mind. One of my earliest influences was John McKaig, the hardcore promoter and photographer from Syracuse. I always appreciated his work ethic and took amazing action pictures. More recently I’ve been putting names and faces with images and researching music photographers like Jenny Lens, Dick Waterman, Jim Marshall, Charles Peterson,
and Edward Colver as well as studying photo history.
I think composition and style is just as important as subject. Lately I’ve been taking a more stripped down approached experimenting with framing and contrast.

James:Were you always a digital guy or did you get your start shooting film?

Jason: Digital changed everything for me. The few early attempts at film were usually disastrous. I have a huge respect for film and especially people who use it to shoot shows, but it just wasn’t practical for me.

James: What else do you love to shoot and why?

Jason: I live rural and urban landscapes, particularly historic architecture. I always had this thought that people and cars unnecessarily dated photos, so I shoot around them.

I’m not really a fan of modern architecture either. I’ve never really explored the area of studio photography, but I don’t have anything particularly against it. I do find it funny that my music photography is essentially nothing but people and the rest of my photos rarely have people at all. I think I just prefer capturing candid moments.

James: Why do you think that is? Are you a very social person in general?

Jason: I wouldn't say I'm totally anti-social, but I was always the quiet kid and youngest of three so I learned to go do things off on my own. I would read, listen to music, or draw.
Punk made me a lot more sociable.

There's a little bit of a funny story that goes with not wanting to have people in the shot as far as New York City shots go. For one thing, I hate tacky signage and lousy remodeling.
New York is beautiful from the second story up. Also, I wanted to set a certain tone for the city pictures versus, say rural landscapes. I grew up in Upstate N.Y. where everyone had this impression that New York City was this lonely desolate and violent place where people go to have their dreams dashed. I remember even teachers telling their students this.
It probably came from books and movies, but I really thought it was like that growing up.
A lot of people still think it's like that. I decided I'd shoot with that in mind.

James: Do you have a preference between Black and White and Color?

Jason: It really depends on the subject.
Black and White is definitely classic, but color sometimes really makes a picture. I feel it out case by case.
Each one sets a certain tone.

James: What are you currently working with? Body and Lens, What made you choose that gear and why it works for you.

Jason: I use a completely stock Nikon D3000 with the Nikkor 18-55 lens and the cheapest external flash I could find.
I figured that would be the first piece of equipment to go, so I didn’t want to make a big investment.
It’s not a particularly fast setup, but I like to keep it simple and portable. I was getting overwhelmed with the whole buying process, but thenI ended up getting a great deal on this camera from someone I knew.
That made it so much easier. Now that I’m starting to really get to know the equipment,
I’ll be able to make a much more conscious decision about what type of equipment I might need.

James: How did you hook up with Brooklyn Vegan? What's that experience been like for you?

Jason: It was actually through a videographer who I kept seeing at shows. I contacted him after we both attended the same 2 shows in the same day. I noticed him in a photo in a view of the second show and recognized him from the first. He remembered me and told me that the metal editor from Brooklyn Vegan had seen my photos and had been asking around about them. That was actually the Powerpoint/InflatableChildren/Go!/Bad Trip show that I went to on a with him. Pretty much every major project I have going on right now is from a connection I made through that show.

James: That was a memorable and very personal show for me. That was about a year before we met. I would have loved to have seen and compared images from that day.

Jason: The funny thing is I never got around to sending them pictures from that show.

Initially I was going to shoot the Afro Punk festival, which was exactly a year ago.

I took on a little too much since it was a 2 day outdoor festival. Someone from the site had sent me a full set of guidelines, but I dropped the idea of shooting for them for a while

and I deleted it. A few months later, I decided I'd try again and shoot the Dead Kennedys at Irving Plaza. The band played well, but it was my first time in front of the gate and there was only one opener. (they were terrible) I dropped the idea again until I decided it was something I really needed to do and we set up the Agnostic Front show@ Santos…
Which was the second time we met.

The most interesting thing about covering events for them is that there isn’t any real limitations as far as the layout goes. One of the big things they push is getting the whole ambiance of the event. I keep pushing myself to get more descriptive shots and put
together more narrative sets. The editing process can be very tedious, but I really enjoy it.
It gives me a chance to study break down each image and figure out what I could do better.

That’s very helpful when you’re teaching yourself.

James: That's one of the things that stands out about your work. You have a unique approach I haven't seen in other photographers work.

What do you think sets you apart? Do you have a game plan when getting ready to shoot?

Jason: One of the reasons whyI was so drawn to punk shows was the lack of barriers between the bands and the participants. I try and blur that line and make it so the viewer not only knows what it looked like to be there, but also what it felt like to be there. You’re watching the show from my point of view.

I don’t really limit myself to just punk, but that‘s the main jump off point. I’ve shot everything from metal to bluegrass since that’s the range of my own musical interest.
I go by what I enjoy and what I think will be visually interesting and what I think people will connect with.
I think that shows up in the finished product.

The New York music scene is flooded with both local and traveling bands.
I do a little bit of research while I’m deciding what to shoot. I watch live videos and try and find pictures from previous performances. Not in a clinical way, but it helps me know what to watch for and decide where I should be when the action starts. It’s also a great way to checkout new bands.

James: Front center, side or on stage?

Jason: It depends on the crowd. I pick a “dig in” spot where I think I can catch the most action just in case I get stuck in one place. If it’s feasible, I try and switch sides mid-set so I can get shots of all the band members. If the stage is accessible and I think the potential shots are worth it, I’ll go for it. The most important thing is not being in anyone’s way. Shows on the floor pose a whole different set of challenges.

James: Why is that?

Jason: Your at face level with everyone. You don't want to blind them with your Flash.
There's equipment and people to watch out for. Especially when you're trying to shoot
down low.

James: Are there any shows or bands you've shot that stick out?

Jason: That would be a very long list, but the best shows are the ones where both the band and audience are enjoying themselves. Coalesce, Wovenhand, Tim Barry, GBH, Langhorne Slim, TheLegendary Shack Shakers, World/Inferno Friendship Society, and Murder By Death
all stand out. EYEHATEGOD is one of the most surprising live bands out there.The first time I saw them, they played nearly 3 hours. You would figure they act like they were full of hatred, but they were all up there smiling and cheering on the crowd. Those guys love what they’re doing.
The Nick Poot Benefit Show featuring Nomos,Perdition, Parasytic, and Brain Killer was probably the most emotional show and intense shows I’ve shot. One of my favorite recent shoots was Tombs. They‘re a great live band both musically and visually.

James: As photographers we've all had to deal with both the bouncers and the people in the pit.
Have you had any serious damage done to yourself or your gear?

Jason: Thankfully nothing more than a few bumps and scrapes and a lot of wear and tear on the camera. I cracked my collarbone and sprained my foot a few years back. They were just random accidents, but it makes me a little more cautious- especially when I’m shooting
in the pit. Having a camera in my hand makes me much more aware of everyone around me. Just a broken flash so far on this camera, but that’s to be expected.

James: What was the hairiest show you've photographed? Why?

Jason: There’s a lot of great shows in this city, but things just aren’t as violent and chaotic
as they used to be. That’s definitely not a bad thing. It’s nice not to have to deal with so
many fights, neo-nazi skinheads, and extra aggressive dancing. I did recently see
The Dillinger Escape Plan at Music Hall of Williamsburg. That show definitely
had it’s moments. I secretly wished they still lit things on fire though.

James: Have you exhibited your images anywhere (gallery or show) If so, where?
If not, any plans in the near future?

Jason: A gallery show would be something I would definitely consider.
I’ve actually been thinking about it a lot lately. I did a few shows early on, but it’s been quite a while. I’d like to see a show of D.I.Y. artist and photographers. It would be interesting to see what everyone is doing.

James: In the past there might be one or two photographers at a show.
These days you can run into half a dozen people shooting for different outlets and sites. You've also got everyone there taking pictures and video with the 4G's and Blackberry's. How do you compete, interact?

Jason: Other photographers can be pretty intimidating, especially when you‘re first starting out. As I started progressing,
my confidence level started going up.
I think it actually pushed me to try different things. I’m usually so focused on what I’m doing, soI don’t really worry about it.
I just shoot around camera phones.
I don’t even like to encourage them.
I’m all about people trying to document their memories as long as they’re not
rude about it. That’s usually not the case.

James: Any advice for the shooters that are coming up? How to approach, act and share the space?

Jason: Don't get overwhelmed, be prepared, be aware, and have fun. Shoot what you like, but don't be scared to go a little out of your element. Most importantly, be polite.
Nothing makes photographers look worse than slamming through a crowd to get to the stage, standing in front of someone while they’re trying to watch the band, or stage diving feet first into the crowd with your camera while picking fights with other photographers.
Yes. I’ve actually seen that happen.

James: Good advice. Words to live by.
