Four Fingers Launch Summer Tour on a High Note

As the hours past and the show creeped closer and closer I began to feel sluggish and rethink my plans for the night. Though I love Four Fingers and wanted to give them a proper goodbye before they embarked on their tour. I had seen them numerous times in recent months and with the exception of Rabbit Troupe I wasn't really inspired by the bands on the bill. At the last minute I gave myself the push I needed and I was off.

As I arrived Sick Jerk? were well into their set. I had recently seen the band play with Four Fingers in Denville and didn't leave with much of an impression but the few songs I caught were really good. The band plays good high energy punk with a comic satire. Just a bunch of kids having fun. I had just arrived and hadn't worked my way through the already growing crowd. Therefore I didn't get any pictures of the band.

Rabbit Troupe followed and played a short set that was really impressive. I've been hearing about these guys for about a year now and it was great finally getting to hear what all the hype was about. The bands performance was short due to some scheduling issues but they made the very most of their time. The band plays high energy indie rock with influences varying from Dinosaur JR. to My Bloody Valentine. The crowd really reacted to the bands set, energy and talent. I was really taken by these guys and I'm looking forward to lots more shows.

I had seen The Flops a few weeks prior at Kearny Irish and to be honest I wasn't the least bit into them. Nonetheless, I didn't want to go entirely on my first impression and took it all in with an open mind. The band plays Hardcore that reminds me of a lot of the stuff I avoided in the 90's. Tough guy mosh core with a Metal influence. The night they played Kearny Irish they broke into a Cro-mags cover that sent the crowd into a frenzy. This time we weren't so lucky. Before they got far in to their set I was convinced I was not into this band at all.

Prior to the show I had absolutely no knowledge or preconceived notions of Melissa & Paul whatsoever. I was, however, curious. So I decided to stay and see what manifested. A two piece with such as Melissa & Paul might get immediate comparisons to the White Stripes and The Black Keys (Both stellar acts in my opinion) but they really stand on their own and create a unique sound that's a melting pot of Rock, Psych, Punk, Garage and the Blues. The set was a highlight to what was already turning out to be a damn good night. Melissa & Paul's chemistry with one another and the crowd were warm and honest. Before their set was over I was already fumbling for my wallet for cash to buy the double 7 inch they had at the merch table. This is a band worthy of checking out and throwing your support to. I also recommend picking up the record if you get the chance.

After what seemed to be some confusion Four Fingers took the stage and went head first in to a set of chaos and bombast. This was their last show in New Jersey before they head out on a summer tour and to say they started things on a high note would be an understatement. I met Tohm, Jeff, Chris and Ryan some time ago and can't say enough about these guys. The band embodies the D.I.Y. spirit. They've been playing shows anywhere and everywhere for years now releasing countless 7 inches, booking their own tours and helping everyone they meet along the way. The band plays a style that is parts A.O.D., parts Black Flag and parts Stooges. Tohms stage presence is that of a wild man bent on self destruction. I've been to many shows where he's ended up a bloody pulp. Yet as self destructive as his style is he treats the crowd with this love and compassion that is rare. The more I see these guys the more I learn that Four Fingers is not a band as much as it is a family. Anyone that comes to their shows is drawn into their circle and accepted unconditionally. The band was in good form on this particular night. As long as I've known them Tohm and drummer Chris have been the madmen of the band. Yet during recent show I've seen guitarist Jeff come out of his shell and really show off what a good guitarist he is. Ryan, the newest member really compliments the band and in my opinion was the the perfect addition to the band. He somehow brings it all together.

A great set to cap off the night and I can't say enough about the people in the audience. I see so many shows where the audience stand in what looks like the next zip code. Afraid that if they got any closer they might lose connection to their wifi. These people were on top of it. They were into it and they were singing along to ever note. James Damion

No Pasaran - Porter In The Making 7" 2011 Killing Horse Records

No Pasaran - Jersey City NJ
Killing Horse Records
Purchase "Porter In The Making" seven inch ep

No Pasaran has been steadily building a name for themselves on the NY/NJ indie/punk scene for the past 5+ years, and I can only hope that their current momentum will carry them on to record and release a full length lp very soon because their brand new 7" ep "Porter In The Making" definitely leaves this listener wanting more.

"Porter In The Making" is one excellent slab of post punk influenced vinyl that is bursting with jagged yet angular guitar rhythms, rock solid drumming and enough hooks to keep you coming back for repeated listens.

No Pasaran is also not to be missed live. I saw them a few nights back (see review below) and they are simply one of the best and most energetic bands out there today.

So in closing I highly recommend you purchase a copy of "Porter In The Making" from Killing Horse Records, and the next time No Pasaran comes through your town get off your ass and show them some love...Dave G.

Ardmore Assault - Philly Punks Make Good.

I met Ardmore Assault a year ago when I traveled down to Philly with the band GO!. That night the band played a wild set at a trashed house called The Terrordome. I spent the rest of the night talking with their singer Jake and drummer Cassidy. We formed a quick friendship and almost a year to date I had them booked for ABC No Rio's final matinee.
Ardmore started when three friends decided to form a band all the way back in grade school. Jake, Pierson and Cassidy were already being influenced by the sounds that were coming out of their area of Ardmore. (Bands like Flag of Democracy, Paint it Black, Lungfish,
Kill The Man That Questions and countless others from their area all had their hands in helping the band find its sound.
After a short stint as 3 O’ Clock Bad Guys with Jake taking duties as both the singer and bassist. The results were less than stellar. Meeting Andrew “A kid with a goofy accent who could play bass” seemed to be the missing piece and the cement to form Ardmore Assault. With a sound that mixed Black Flag, Infest and A.O.D. they were on their way. Feeling the need to have something representative of their sound and raw approach they rushed into the basement to record the infamous cassette demo. Though they are eager to admit it was rushed and not the best way to get their stuff heard. It definitely shows a band who seems at is best in a small intimate setting such as a house or basement show. Thus far the band has mostly played shows around the Philly area and played with bands like World Inferno Friendship Society, Citizens Arrest, Mind Eraser and Common Enemy. They’ve also made it up to NYC supporting GO! for the final matinee at ABC No Rio. On that particular day they helped start demolish the aging LES structure with a stellar set of piss and vinegar.
When I spoke to the band that night they seemed as close as ever but hinted that changes could be coming soon. Let's just hope that they haven't outgrown one another just yet. In the meantime check them out live or better yet, book a show for them. James Damion

Cicada Radio - Imposter ep 2011

Cicada Radio - Jersey City New Jersey

Cicada Radio remind me of many of my favorite bands from the 90's underground music scene like Karate, Small Brown Bike and Knapsack, just to name a few...meaning the music is packed with emotion and impassioned vocals , yet retains an indie sensibility that keeps everything in control and mature sounding. I guess what I'm saying is that Cicada Radio remind me of many of the best bands from the 90's who fell under the Emo flag, but thankfully didn't fit the Emo mold that most people would associate with, and that is a very good thing.

The most surprising thing to me about this ep is how refreshing it actually sounds to my ears. I know I have referenced the 90's in my description of Cicada Radio's sound, however Cicada Radio has managed to keep things sounding fresh and interesting on this ep, and I highly recommend that you head over to their Bandcamp page to give this excellent ep a listen for yourself...Dave G.

The Nolan Gate - No Pasaran - Cold Fur - Cicada Radio - Live Maxwells, Hoboken NJ 06/24/2011

I headed out last night to catch two of my favorite local bands The Nolan Gate and No Pasaran at the legendary Maxwell's in Hoboken New Jersey. Also sharing the bill were two more local acts Cicada Radio and Cold Fur.

Up first was Cicada Radio from Jersey City NJ who delivered an excellent set of 90's inspired rock that brought bands like Boilermaker, Small Brown Bike and Knapsack to mind for me, which is a good thing. The crowd was definitely digging these guys, and overall they delivered a very strong set of music. Check out their band camp page (link is below) where you can download their most recent ep .

Up next was Cold Fur who also hail from Jersey City and are comprised of Dave ( drums ) and Ralph ( vocals) from The Rye Coalition and 2 ex members of Jersey City's The Want. You could definitely hear the Rye Coalition influence in the Cold Fur songs, however the songs definitely stood up on their own, and the musicianship was top notch. I would bet Cold Fur is going to be moving up the underground ladder pretty quickly in the coming months so keep your eyes and ears out for them.

The third band on the bill was the mighty Nolan Gate who have been banging it out on the Jersey club scene in one form or another for the past 15 years and to my ears they just keep getting better and better with age. The Gate delivered a pulverizing set of heavy precise and pounding songs including some new songs that they recently recorded for their upcoming as of yet untitled 4th album, and man the new songs are smoking. If you ever get a chance to see The Nolan Gate live I highly suggest you do not pass them up.

Finally, No Pasaran finished off the night, and rightfully so as they were celebrating the release of their brand spanking new 7 " Porter In The Making" on Killing Horse Records. No Pasaran definitely delivered a high energy frantic set of 80's post punk inspired madness. If you like bands like Gang of Four or Wire then you should definitely catch No Pasaran live and grab a copy of their 7", you will not be disappointed...Dave G.

Something About Death or Dying - Demo 2010

My initial thoughts upon listening to this demo is that it sounds like Converge/Doomriders, or a band that would be right at home on Deathwish Records, and while this sound has been done to death in recent years, "Something About Death or Dying" manage to keep the music interesting, and bring so much pure energy and emotion / anger to the table that I can't help but find myself completely enthralled in these songs.

"Something About Death or Dying" hail from my hometown of Jersey City NJ, yet I have somehow managed to be completely ignorant to their existence until my boy James dropped this demo on me a few days ago. Hell, if I knew there were bands this good in Jersey City I would get off my ass and go catch some shows, and I suggest you do the same if "Something About Death or Dying" come through your town...Dave G.
